Ianh - I agree, need to check the diff oil. I have an Ashcroft ATB in there, and I want to be sure it doesn’t go thirsty. I’d have done it when I sorted the flange, but the axle was jacked up at one end so I didn’t think the diff would drain properly. Agree too about measuring the length of the hole viz the bolts - but I only thought about that afterwards!
Andy - I think you might be right - impact gun, 20 bolts and the car is mobile. But it would need to be wheels that allowed access wouldn’t it? Most (?) wouldn’t - boosts etc. Donald 1994 Defender 300Tdi 110 SW - owned since 2002 - 230k miles and going strong (The 'rolling restoration' or tinkering thread: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic58538.html ) 2000 Range Rover P38 4.0L V8 in the past.. Surely if you just pop one shaft off the rear then the vehicle can be rolled? Open diff between front and back, open across the rear axle, no effect from the hand brake or gearbox.

As already stated by some, it must be human intervention, whether by the guys in the car park or the night before, as I’d driven it to the hotel (this is all in Lyon btw, not where I live, 200+km away) without any sign, any slack anything at all. Also in the morning. Perhaps (as they were in a LR courtesy car) they’d noticed the axle was devoid of bolts, but I wasn’t around for them to tell me? Opposite side of the car to the driver, so I never noticed.
Fortunately, to answer those that asked, I’d driven no more than 250m before it came out, and very fortunately, (but entirely accidentally) when I drifted to a halt on a Total forecourt, there was a large DIY store next door. So I bought some bolts, popped them in (no sign of shearing), double checked all three remain wheels - tight as - and drove off. What’s more, as a little more info, I changed my half shafts and flanges only three weeks ago and torqued the bolts to the right setting on each wheel. There is no way one should have come out, let alone all five. Anyway, yet another thing to keep an eye on. Monsieur Le Grenadier I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list..... 2011 Puma 110DC - Corris Grey |

The only downside of the open face on some of the wheels is it makes it very easy for someone else to get their hands on your shaft...
