Is this my second dreaded Output Shaft failure? Loss of drive coming off a roundabout. Very quiet. No grinding. Instant. Have pulled up in petrol station. Can get drive in both high and low diff loc, but can't seem to engage standard drive. Makes a clunk but not engaging. Thoughts? Clearly need to be recovered.

Indeed sounds like the shaft between the gearbox and transfer box, what type had you got? DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

Could easily be a half shaft.

Front diff fail. That’s my favourite to kill.
1st gear, out of difflock, hand brake off, gently up on the clutch. Assume no movement from vehicle, then look underneath and see which prop is spinning. As said if it was gearbox shaft there would be no drive at all. |

Found the problem. Walked around the car and saw this. Two guys were hanging around whilst I was grabbing a cafe. Thought they were just looking it over as often happens. I'd already driven without problem for an hour this morning and then immediately after they'd loitered around the Def, this happens. Clearly they couldn't be nicking the wheel with 50 people around and mid morning. Interestingly they were in a battered Freelander, a courtesy car from a LR garage in a the area. Do we think they'd nick the bolts so that I'd break down and have to call them? Some proper f*ckwitery if that's the case.

Any sign of sheared bolts?

Looks like they were maybe trying to steal the halfshafts but got disturbed? If you don't have the bolts I would take one from each of the other 3 wheels and drive away carefully. Don't leave the vehicle unattended where you are or they may take the whole car, which may be the plan anyway?

Well, this might be a bit o/t but I’d noticed that I was getting oil on the o/s rear wheel. Jacked up, wheel off, and all 5 bolts were loose. So a very simple fix, but why?? It certainly “could” be human error. Did I forget to torque them when I checked the bearings last time?? OTOH I have a one piece halfshaft on the n/s. When I tried to fit one on the o/s it would go in, but as soon as it was tightened up, the diff wouldn’t turn. I went back to the halfshaft/drive member on that side. Looking at it again, now that I’ve had this issue, I did wonder if there might be something out of spec on this hub. I can’t remember the colour of the box it came in, but wonder if it it might just be a couple of mm too ‘thin’. This would allow the one piece halfshaft to go too far into the diff, but might it also mean that the drive flange nuts are bottoming out and not torqueing properly?? It doesn’t feel like it, but who knows. Occam’s razor does suggest human error though… 
Apols if this is too far OT but it was Shroppy’s words that brought it to mind. Worth checking your rear diff oil level ASAP as some will likely have escaped given the half shaft was out.
I do hope none of the bolts were sheared if it was someone trying to steal the shafts or disable the vehicle in a hurry. |

Would it be the case that you undo the drive flanges, then you can pull/push/tow the vehicle to steal it?
