I’m sure I’m not the only one drooling here 😬.

Can you tell us more about the engine and gearbox.

Is this single or twin turbo engine, which gearbox are you using, 8hp?

Are you using a stage 2/hybrid turbo?

A few questions! What’s the fuel economy like? What sort of revs are seeing at cruising speed (60,70etc). Is the engine and gearbox new or refurbed or just straight out of a donor? If donor and If you do t mind me asking, what was the donor and how much did it set you back?

Thanks
Col

Wow what a smooth setup, nice and quiet and looks plenty fast enough! I am really impressed with that, could have come from the factory like that. 2005 Td5 90 XS

Thanks everyone for the nice comments, means a lot and glad you all approve. I like things looking OEM Plus, and one of my considerations from the start was to try and not make it worse at anything. That might go out the window when I tackle suspension but probably only due to fat ARBs, I won’t be lowering it.

I’ll do a video under the bonnet and underneath tomorrow if the weather allows, I think one of the best things about the M57 conversions and the way Marcus (MW Machines) does it is how ‘right’ it all looks and fits, to be honest it makes the Puma look like a conversion.

Answering a few questions:-

Engine is an M57N2 single turbo, with some performance modifications including hybrid turbo. Gearbox is a ZF8HP70 from an x-drive variant 3 series, also modified and running standalone controller.

MPG, I got 26mpg on a long run loaded up to North Wales camping, cruising 70- 80 mph on motorway then Cross country A and B road driving. Just filled up again today and had done 24mpg mostly driving around town, bit of hooning, definitely not aiming for economy.

It does about 2100 rpm at 70 mph in top gear. It’ll sit happily at 90 or more but it’s a bit noisy above 80; roof rack, transfer boxes, door seals etc etc. Haven’t pushed it too speed wise, gets a bit sketchy around 100mph, definitely not happy, but it’s not at all what it’s built for.

Engine and gearbox both bought used from crash damaged cars. The engines can be had pretty cheap from breakers but IMO it’s definitely worth paying more for one with history thats been looked after. The M57 is a strong reliable engine, but not when neglected. It’s not been rebuilt, just refreshed with some gaskets, seals and some new parts.

Gear indicator is my own work, there’s an arduino microcontroller reading CAN and driving the screen.

Diffs are Ashcroft LSD in the rear and centre. Open diff in front, the original Puma 2 pin with 160k on it. Don’t think I fancy an LSD up front, maybe a 4 pin at some point.

Brakes next off Luke at LOF, just waiting on delivery from the manufacturer, ordered in stealth / OEM grey.

Mat,

Do you have any sound deadening mats in the car?

Yes, as well as XS carpets and rubber over mats I’ve added sound deadening to the bulkhead/dashboard rear, floor and transmission tunnel. Still to tackle doors and roof.

Mat,

I thought with so much sound deadening you’ve had in the car the noise should be ok?

By the way, I saw this information gauge, also gear indicator, from twisted page. Do you know where to get this, it looks neat Smile.

That is a good one. But actually the transit engine was a conversion, just done at the factory. You only need to check how many output shafts have failed in their JLR made adaptor. 2.2 engine bay looks a bit neater, but still same or worse, due to manufacturing, adaptor issue.

Edit: the adaptor housing is stamped with FoMoCo, which I normally associate with Ford. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
