Yeh not sure why its been listed as a CAT B!?
I reckon most defenders that are on the road are CAT B or C lol  |

Annoyingly you have to have the correct license to break a vehicle so have to pay their fees to go and break on their site otherwise they won’t let you buy it
SJM it’s not as simple or cheap as you think for the insurance company to rebuild it, most will insist on brand new genuine parts which takes the price up (a 90 roof panel alone is c.£4500) and any damage no matter how small should be rectified and for things like the tub they should replace the whole hole lot and not just one skin as they can’t get an “as new” repair done. Also the Labour rates at the “approved repairers” they want to use are up there with main dealer rates as they know hey can charge what they want |

Copart make you sign an indemnity before you can bid on Cat B that states you will be liable for any costs of taking it back off the road again.

Jimbo - I get that using the proper stuff is expensive, but I'm sure I read somewhere that CAT Bs were normally recorded when the cost to repair was more than 200% of market value.
Assuming the retail price of £22k is correct, I can't believe that it would cost more than ~£44k to repair that damage. I would understand a S/C, but a B just seems a bit harsh. Although taking my tinfoil hat off, the trailer and difflock lights are illuminated, so maybe there's more to it than the obvious damage. 2011 CSW XS 90 |

Just take a look at the price of a genuine puma bulkhead...
I have 3 i paid circa 700 for from LR, i think retail is now 4800. so yes... 4100 price increase. |

It does make me wonder if that has been incorrectly categorised, I don't see how it can possibly be a Cat B unless the person who inspected and categories it has no clue how classic Defenders are constructed (I actually don't see how a classic Def could ever be a Cat B under the rules).
If it was a new Def then it would be a Cat B, so I wonder if someone has their wires crossed. It's sad to see a perfectly repairable vehicle being scrapped unnecessarily, and hardly very "green" for this day and age. |

there may be other factors involved and we used to see various things like multiple claims, etc affect Category status when I used to buy salvage years back
you used to have to sign a disclaimer to the Salvage Yard / Insurance company that the shell would be crushed and only used for parts (cat A / B) - indeed they normally had their ID removed / obliterated to stop them re-appearing on the road not sure if this is still enforced?? its also classed as "waste" once written off hence you require both a waste transfer licence (if transporting) and also a licensed premises for dismantling |
