Heavy duty gearbox?
My wife (God bless her) just said "well, we've got the car for life, so if the gearbox is still crap after the warranty expires we'll just get a new one...

I just looked through this forum and saw mention of a heavier duty Transit gearbox that should drop straight in... light at the end of a 3 year tunnel perhaps?

Anyone have more info on this?

I don`t thing it is that simple without a HD clutch assembly. Ì guess the transit has DM flywheel. Puma 110" SW

So HD clutch as well then? Not sure about size problems...
DM flywheel would suck though. Or go the whole hog and squeeze in the 3.2 engine Very Happy

there is nothing wrong with the gearbox. If yours is playing up just get it fixed, if you have warranty I can't see the issue.

I had a feeling that there were some other differences in the LR implementation too. Isn't the box also dustproofed and modded internally so that it will work OK when the Landy is at steep angles i.e. oil baffles or something. I'm not sure of the detail, I just remember reading it somewhere.

Thanks for the sensible advice but I was rather more interested in a technical discussion of what might be possible for the Pumas after the warranty expires. As they are the newest design they should last longest, at least until I die Whistle
I am not convinced that replacing one (possibly) badly designed gearbox with another of the same type is a good idea Rolling Eyes so it would be interesting to explore other, e.g. heavier duty, possibilities for the future.

For now, I am resigned to put up with my dodgy Getrag gearbox for a while and see what happens. After three bad experiences with a German dealer breaking more than they fix, I'll only use the warranty if I really have to Sad

Cheers,

I E-Mailed Dave Ashcroft today and he says they are rebuilding the MT82 already - now reassured Very Happy Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

Ford do make a higher capacity MT82 for the Transits but the Defender seems to only have the low capacity version, we are fairly new to these but from what I can gather at least 3 of the bearings are bigger,

I can buy the transit hi-cap one from Ford and am looking to swap the rear casing to fit the defender one, this will make a bolt in hi-cap defender MT82

so far the failures we have seen are the dog teeth coming off reverse gear, mainshaft/pinion bearing failing causing a noisy 3rd and one wrecked 1st syncro baulk ring,
