Fluctuating fuel gauge
Does a varying fuel gauge reading point to a fault with the in tank sender unit or the sensor unit? 90 300 tdi. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel
1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali
2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu
2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai

It could do, but it might be as simple as a bad/intermittent connection between the sender and the gauge or the earth of the gauge or the power to the sender.

What ere TDI do you have?

Check the connection on the sender underneath the drivers lift up panel, maybe a dirty connection.

Ok so start simple. 9 times out of 10 it is an earthing problem.

The fuel sender/gauge system on a 300tdi is a pretty simple bit of kit. The first step is to pull the binnacle and check that the gauge is earthed properly. There is usually an earth lead on the fixing screw, but these loosen or corrode over time. Clean them up and re-fit. Check the rest of the spade connectors are good too. After that it is a matter of checking the connectors on the fuel sender itself. It should only have 2 wires going in, power in (12v) and signal out (variable voltage). Check contacts, clean and refit. It would be worth checking the continuity between the sender and the gauge as well, jiggle the wire a bit to simulate going over bumps, if the continuity is lost then the wire needs replacing back to the gauge.

Working? If not then it might be the sender units variable resistor has worn. This will be a remove and replace job requiring a sender, seal and locking ring.
