I had a similar accident when rear ended by a BMW when I had a RRS, with similar damage. I could continue on my way, but I would not say minor damages, the final bill was several thousand. |

A good point you raised there Supacat.
Also a good reason as to not let the third party say that they will pay cash to make the repairs, as soon as the real bill comes in, they will be off. Always go through the insurance and be ready to call the police if they won’t give you their details. In short, don’t trust anyone, and take a lot of pictures with your phone. The problem with all those plastics is that they hide the hidden damage. |

Agreed ^^^^^ I had a BMW 530 Sport some time ago and it was only a few month's old when a lad in a Golf ran into the back of me. His front end was pretty mangled but I only had the slightest of marks on my bumper. As it was my pride and joy I went through the insurance and took it in to Sytners. Blimey those bumpers are expensive.....

The idea of a bumper being a bolt on to a car that is sacrificial went a long time ago My first car was a Mk2 Ford Fiesta. The bumpers were not unlike a Defender where there is a metal centre and end caps clipped to each end. I went through a bumper and a few endocarps and never needed to worry a bodyshop or my insurance company. Must have saved me a fortune. Second thoughts, the metal in that Fiesta bumper was much better quality than the one which is rusting through on my Defender at present  |

Generally just bumper height vs a lower vehicle that makes 4x4s/SUVs/whatevers appear to fare better in minor accidents - crash structure has to deform to work in everything.

When I was working in Dubai 20 some years ago I had a old (even then) Range Rover Vogue with the steel bumpers. Stopped at traffic lights I hear a squeal, look in the rear view mirror and see a Mercedes S class about to rear end me at speed. Braced myself and felt the crunch. The mercedes complete front end was stoved in with radiator pushed about 6 inches back into engine bay, had to be lifted onto a flat bed. As was the procedure at the time (and very efficient it was too) I had to go and get three estimates for repairs the next day and report to the police station where I met the mercedes owner who had to pay cash for the repair - it was 65$ for the touch up and his car was written off

Hung on with the Isuzu DMAX until last year - on mine it did feel a bit of a 1970's anachronism at the back end - along with its leaf spring rear suspension
