to start with 2.4 or 2.2 ?
can you read DTC ? do you have access to Namco to plug in and read DT codes live date from ECU on start up i.e. fuel presser |

It’s the 2.4
I have an ultra gauge wired in but do also have a nanocom. I’ll have a look at the fuel pressure numbers when I get back. |

So after leaving the car for a few hours it fired up on the second turn.
After turning it off it wouldn’t fire again. Here’s a vid of the nanocom stats https://streamable.com/yv2cyw I did have this fault code: Click image to enlarge |

And now it just fires up first time!
Fuel rail pressure is running at 22.12-24.25 Fuel rail sensor is 23.87 Fuel required is 124-127 but dropping as it’s ticking over Quick scan shows the same fault code as above. Cleared and scanned and no faults. My battery seems to be running at 14.00 - 14.50v which seems high? |

Fuel rail pressure is ok at start up
are reading engine rpm then starting ? if not check CKP crank position sensor left hand side engine flywheel end i.e. driver side Is that DTC U0100 appearing again ? loss comm on the CAM to the ecm - abs - ins panel check wiring and instrument plugs have been common problem point |

Thanks dorsetsmith
I did a cold start this morning and it fired up immediately. Left to run, turned off and started again and it fired up on the button. Scanned for faults and it’s all clear. Have now started it about 7 times and it’s fired first time every time. RPM gets to about 180 then it fires. So now I’m at a loss as it seems fine. I’ll take it for a drive and get it up to temp and see what happens. |

camshaft position sensor CMP will stop engine from starting if is failed with dtc, but if fails when engine running ecu go to default set point with DTC
intermittent faults are |

@dorsetsmith You’re absolutely right! What a
Took it out today to test and the issue seems to come up when the engine is up to temp. Started first time from cold. Got it up to temp, turned off and waited a min before starting and it just turned over. Tried a few more times and it did fire up. Started a few more times but only after several goes each time. So warm engine = trouble firing up. Oh and no faults when scanned. Bearing in mind that this issue only started after the head gasket was replaced. I just have no idea |

Could it be air in the fuel system?

Hey Greyman
I had starting issues after replacing my head gasket, I couldn't fire up at all. In the end it was a faulty Crankshaft sensor even though it was a new one. I would try to replace this and maybe also the camshaft sensor. They are not expensive and you can keep them as spares if they don't solve the issue. Good luck Kev |

Seems like that’s the general consensus so I’ll pick one up and see what happens.

So I replaced the cam sensor (the one at the top on the near side) took the car for a drive up to temp. Turned it off and tried to start it again.
It took longer to turn over (about 3 seconds) but it fired up. Tried it a few times and it was generally the same each time. From cold start it fires in 1 second. Does this sensor work in conjunction with the crank sensor? Should I replace both or would it not make any difference? It’s certainly not fixed but does seem slightly better. |

Cam sensor is used in conjunction with the crankshaft position sensor, but the cam sensor is only used during startup when it allows the ECM to determine which stroke the engine is on, it being a four-stroke engine of course.
