When trying out all the buttons on my brand new D 90 250 SE - as you do...........I must have engaged the ASL instead of the cruise control and was enjoying a relaxed 50 miles per hour drive when suddenly the Defender dramatically slowed down all by itself
 (got an angry blast on the horn from a following car) to 20 miles an hour. In hindsight, it seems that I had passed a 20MPH sign on a side road that the traffic sign recognition sensor picked up. Had to rapidly press cancel to be able to accelerate as there wasn't any speed limit sign on the main road at that point.
Reading the iManual on line (!) later all it says is "If the adaptive speed limiter detects a speed limit lower than the current vehicle speed, it automatically slows the vehicle to meet the speed limit"......"The adaptive speed limiter's detected speed limit can be overridden if rapid acceleration is required. Fully press the accelerator pedal to accelerate past the adaptive speed limiter's set speed. When the vehicle's speed drops below the adaptive speed limiter's detected speed limit, any speed limitations are reapplied." I realise people will say that there are plenty of indications on the steering wheel and the instrument screen, but when it's a new toy there are so many things to look at  |

Sounds a fantastic 'safety' feature..........
Out of interest do they show the brake lights when applying this speed cut?? Or does following traffic just have to guess?? |

Judging from the irate toot from the following driver I would assume there is no brake light indication......but from up front who knows

That’s a problem with adaptive speed limiter my present Volvo has it and will often pick up 20 mph side street signs that have been bent to face the main road, probably by kids. The worst occurrence I had was on the M20, where there were roadworks and part of the road had been coned off for work vehicles with a 10 mph sign. Car damn near did an emergency stop, had to hit button very quickly to switch it off. You just learn to live with it. 110 XS 250 MY 23 Gondwana Stone, Cold climate pack and towbar

All cars do this, some worse than others, you just have to accelerate or brake for immediate adjustment, then cancel it.

Funnily enough none of mine do this and hopefully won't as I just keep buying / storing "classics" and have little intention of anything 'modern'........
If this is progress then I'll happily sit 10years+ behind.......  |

Was using it when I borrowed one last weekend. Hit roadworks on a dual carriageway. Temp speed limit of 50 but the National speed limit sign repeaters still on lap posts. Kept fluctuating between the two every 100m until I turned it off. https://instagram.com/bentheoandrews

when i collected the car from the dealers the sales rep advised me to disable it and leave it off, in Australia
there are school zones which have 40KPH limits at particular "times of day" even on busy A roads, so the likelihood of getting a shunt up the rear is quite high. I have also noticed TSR detects speed signs which are off to the side, such as car parks (10KPH) and even other signage which is not a formal limit, i have had 100KPH pop up in a 50 zone on numerous occasions.. i think the sales rep was right, if it picks up using TSR, then ASL will stay off indefinitely yet another pommie bar steward down under MY20 110 P400 SE Defender MY10 3.0 RR Sport |

On most vehicles that have adaptive cruise control, ACC, you can disable the automatic speed detection independently of ACC. Then ACC is just an enhanced cruise control, controlling the speed to vehicles in front etc. and also starting and stopping in heavy traffic automatically if it offers that feature.
Is it necessary no, but then neither is cruise control. Is it better that previous cruise control system and convenient when you’re stuck on the M25 in stop start traffic, yes. |

Is using a speed limiter common in the UK? Is it due to strict speed enforcement or something? I just can’t imagine ever wanting to use it because ‘Merica!
