I have a standard, early 300tdi 110 Defender, which is good because it is pre-cat/EGR age so we are already ahead of the curve for performance upgrades there.
Just checking her over last week ready for an upcoming MOT and spotted the exhaust front pipe has some corrosion pinholes along the seam so it needs replacing sooner rather than later. Five years ago I fitted some of the Paddocks/SS stainless exhaust sections to replace rotten middle box section and tail pipe. Pretty cheap, but sure enough you get what you pay for and these have since started to rust(?!?!) on the tubes quite badly although strangely the silencer part has remained nice and shiny (under the dirt ![]() Anyway, more fool me I decided that for the price I might as well add the front pipe from the same source but on arrival I didn't like the look of the bends as these appear to stretch the pipe and really shrink the diameter which can't be a good thing for performance surely. I then got the calipers out and measured the diameter to compare to the original standard front pipe. Turns out SS only use 2" pipe and my other sections are also only 2" ![]() I have decided my best option is a full replacement with something stainless in the correct bore, or even better why miss a chance for a small improvement and maybe go a bit bigger...... ![]() A quick google keeps bringing THIS up and the 2.5" sports silencer option seems to fit the bill. The single silencer will match what I have now as I replaced the centre box with a straight through pipe. They keep the centre silencer but delete the back box instead which is tidier around the rear wheel arch. Is there any other options/suppliers I should be looking at? Custom build maybe? |

I have a Demand SS exhaust and my V8 and it is lovely! Great guys too, highly recommend. Only 2 miles down the road too which is handy for me

I went for a Griffin system. Beautiful piece of work. I think it's 3" bore throughout. Single silencer.
For me it complements a bunch of other stuff, but it just does its job well. Yes, it's on my 1994 (only!) Defender.
Like I said, it was to complement other stuff, so I don't think I could say whether the exhaust itself makes the difference. I had my engine rebuilt and while that was being done I had an AMC gas-flowed head fitted; A VNT turbo; Full width intercooler; the fuel pump was tweaked; and I fitted a Donaldson air filter. All of this has made a huge difference to the driveability of the car, and I don't doubt that each thing makes its own contribution, but I'm afraid I couldn't isolate the exhaust, sorry. Had a few systems over the tears. But can’t fault the Demand one. Brilliant quality, no messing about. Great controllable sound on my Td5.

OK, just ordered the Demand one after speaking to them on the phone.
Bit of a wait unfortunately but that's not a big problem other than my impatience. Should have some lovely steel shininess arriving in 10-14 days hopefully. Did look at the griffin 3" system but think it might be overkill for a standard untuned 300tdi and also appears to be sleeved joints with clamps which is not my favourite system. The Demand exhaust has the standard sections and joints, just bigger so looks more 'standard' which is ok with me. |

I found exactly the same issue with the DoubleS systems.
When my OE 300TDi system came up for replacement I bought a DoubleS system and found the exact same issue, diameter was smaller and the bends were very poor with definite kink / flat instead of a nice smooth bend. Needless to say it went straight back and I found an alternative. Fast forward 15-years or so to last year and I bought a Demand "sports" system with a single silencer. No issues. ONE LIFE, GET IT! Thanks for all the positive posts about the Demand exhausts, make me feel much better about spending a considerable sum on something so 'ordinary' as an exhaust for an old car
![]() Sounds like I will not be disappointed. |

Dug out some old photos of my DoubleS downpipe (which was promptly returned), exactly the same issue.
My photos date from 20/07/2008 so the quality hasn't improved at all! ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge ONE LIFE, GET IT! |

They are shockingly bad. Wish I had spotted the issues when fitting the rear pipes because I could have gotten to this point much quicker.
