United Kingdom 1997 Defender 90 300 Tdi CSW Firenze Red
Karls Defender 90 300 Tdi
So I've finally taken the plunge and joined the Defender gang!

Looks one of the best 90s Ive seen for under £10k - lots on ebay have all new paintwork/bells and whistles but most have been pigs, with bodged up chassis etc
Materially its in good condition, just needs some new seats inside, cubby box and some dash refinements possibly a double din etc. The interior needs a all insulating and sound deadening. with some covering around the back.

On the exterior Im going to give the paintwork a good going over and possibly looking at stripping the front bulkhead, rust curing it now and repainting - try stop the bubbling in its tracks before winter sets in, dont want any wet feet!
2 Pano Windows from Masai 4x4 on the rear quarters - still undecided on rear seats in the back - just checking Ive seen the car will insured as a van but if I stick rear windows in and seats it will then need to be changed to domestic car insurance?

Wheels - I think I'll be looking at sawtooth alloys and keeping the tyres.

Cant wait to get started!!

Lovely truck.

My recommendation is to keep it as original and period correct as possible. I do believe that the period correct trucks are more pleasing to the eye that those that have been 'upgraded'.

Think of a lady that has advanced in life and tries to wear 18 year old girls clothes. Rolling with laughter 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

As above, keep her subtle, having said that, once you've looked into that vortex it's very hard not to buy loads of cool bits. If you work out how to do it, let me know!
Good luck

I am sure there are more people that know more about what colours were available in 1997 unless it was re painted at some point in life, as the original ebay listing says metallic?

But could originally have been Portofino red? 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

I don't know what red colour it is, but I'm certain it's not Portofino/Arrow. That's what I have, and it's not the same colour. Donald

Its like the deep shiny red - still original colour not had any weld or paintwork - just got a few bubble spots coming through on the front bulkhead where the vents are.

It's age suggests that it should be Portofino/Arrow/Corallin red (LRC390), which was the shade used from 1988 to 1997. There should be a paint code on a metal label under the bonnet. Usually rivetted to the brake pedal housing, IIRC. Darren

So little update for everyone, a few dash/interior upgrades this weekend - LED interior light, fixing the steering cowl, new smoked side repeaters and bulbs and new blade windscreen wipers.

Resprayed the under seat metal plate covers and gave the inside a good going over, going to carpet clean the seats tomorrow before I put some new covers on from Masai 4x4. Gave everything a good wipe and clean down ready for the sound deadening matting going in next week and new full new interior carpet set the week after.

I did get the front 2 bolts from the middle seat but my brother has taken my other ratchet set so don't have a big enough head to go over the rear bolts, think there 17s so that will be a job for tomorrow evening and then installing a raptor 4x4 cubby box Smile

PS I did check for my paint code but the metal plate is blank Sad anybody got any ideas where to find the paint code now?

I had the same problem with my 1988 90. No paint code on the nameplate to go with. I searched online for the name of the color that were offered around that same period of manufacture. I shortlisted the colour names, until I was unsure between 2. What I then did is removed one of the mysterious panels that are fitted to the bulkhead behind the seats, those should have had least fading, and visited a paint shop. Compared the panel to some swatches, and once I was almost sure, I purchased a sample. I tested the sample, and luckily it was spot on first time. Then I knew the code and I could buy larger batches. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
