Advice on shocks
I need to replace the shocks on my 110 however am looking to get the best value shocks for my money. I have been looking at terrafirma pro sport or if really genuine worth the investment (not just for the looks) OME. Any thoughts as to what other people would recommend would be great to hear. Mainly for road use, standard springs and occasional offroad use.

many thanks

OME shocks are good. I have them in the rear at present and will be putting them on the front when the time comes. I don’t get the impression terrafirma are particularly high quality, prone to breaking. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

OME are great if expensive. give gywn lewis a call on them and he can advise what will work fo you.
avoid the cheap end of the market. terrafirma are ok but they rust fast. they last well though
Bearmach have 3 yr warranty and you can upgrade from oil to gas which i think are better all round

ok thank you for all your replies, i think ome may be slightly out of my budget if i think about it realistically. So if there are any more sort of mid range shocks that you could recommend that would be great thank you (similar prices to terrafirma would be what i am looking to spend)
cheers

If you look on Euro Car Parts, they sell Sachs (choice of gas charged and normal), Monroe (who make OME’s shocks) and KYB. They are all proper reputable manufacturers and should be decent and ECP almost always have a big discount code on the go. Need to keep in perspective this is a Defender after all. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Sam

Seven years ago when i gave Frogs Island 4x4 my TD5 90 to learn how to install a KAM rear locker with limited slip they gave me a set of pro-type plus 5 inch adjustable shocks to test. These are pin to pin fittings.

i only replaced those last month.

You only need the standard or plus 2 inch depending on your use (normal fittings)

The breakages that you sometimes hear about at the rear upper fixing because the bolt has been over tightened and thus not allowing the shock to rotate as the axle drops through an arc (the wheel does not go straight down).

To check this, do the top fitting on the rear up first, then swing it through an arc, if its too stiff or wont move then it is too tight, then connect the lower shock mount.

when testing the adjustable shocks i used setting 1 for pure off-road, 2 for general driving around for comfort, 3 for fast road work (very supportive up to 90 mph, no body roll when over taking) and 4 did not suit the weight of the 90 nor the mud terrains i run (i value my fillings and spine)

I have now fitted OME as i have always wanted to try them.

hope this information helps you.

Thumbs Up

Very happy with my set up which is primarily for road use:

Bilstein U-B6 Performance Damper Kit.
H&R progressive  - 1" lowering spring kit.
H&R anti-roll bars.
Superpro poly bushes.

No body roll, no bounce on a country roads. incredibly stable at speed (+90 mph) Thumbs Up

I understand my set up is commonly used by Twisted and Urban. I've not tried Fox but hear good things also.
