Hi,
A more precise description of your exact model would be of assistance in gaining help from this forum, but assuming it's a Defender, the 10AS unit should be fitted but is not activated according to your description. You say you have no alarm, but you may have a working immobiliser. Do you see a red LED indicator in the middle of the speedometer? Look through the drivers window of the locked vehicle & check whether there is a red LED flashing once per second. It needs to be locked for about 30 mins to be sure, & it is not very bright. You could have a situation where the immobiliser is activated, but not the alarm, & in any case, if you do not have a remote for the alarm/central locking, & are only using the key to gain entry, then the alarm cannot be fully activated. In some jurisdictions immobilisers are mandatory, so that part of it could well be operable. It would be of great help if there is someone in your area who has a Nanocom configured for Defender, otherwise a LR dealer should be able to setup the alarm. You would need to get a remote, & this will need to be programmed to the 10AS for full usage of the 10AS features. Other forum members may also be able to suggest alarm specialists (apart from LR dealers), who can help. Hope this helps. Cheers, Lionel |

Hi Lionel,
Sorry for the late reply. I have a 2003 TD5 110 hardtop defender. I should be able to remove the dash and look for the 10AS unit tomorrow but I checked the light above the dash. There is a small circle where I assume the red LED you were talking about is supposed to be, once locked no red light flashes even after an hour or more. Also yes I have no fob or central locking on the defender currently. After some quick googling I have found that immobilizers have been compulsory in England since 1998 so there is a good chance I have one fitted to my defender as it was originally registered in England back in 03. There is a small independent garage near by which specialize in land rovers so I am going to contact them on Monday fingers crossed they will have a Nanocam. Thanks for your help! |

You will almost certainly have a 10AS unit behind your instrument panel. It is a green box & it will have 315MHz or 433MHz printed on the face. If you want to purchase a fob you will need to know the correct frequency in order the get the right one. The local LR garage you mention could well have something that can communicate with the 10AS, even if it is not a Nanocom. Obviously LR Testbook, which they may have access to, can do this. It sounds as if your 10AS has been programmed just to work the central locking (which you don't actually have) - this is very common with Defenders, particularly here in Australia, where Defender drivers prefer to have the immobiliser & alarm functions de-activated for travel to remote areas, which can be hundreds of Km from service facilities. It should be a very easy task to program the 10AS to your requirements provided the right interface is available to communicate with it. I would strongly advise purchasing a fob, as you will then have all the facilities of the 10AS at your disposal. (note comment above re. the correct frequency!). This can be programmed in to your system at the same time as the rest of the job. Cheers, Lionel |
