What supports the driveshaft at the axle tube end?
Hi all, strange question but...

I've just rebuilt the entire passenger side from stub axle out due to what sounds like a bearing rumble, squeak and occasionally as you come to a stop a vibrating accompanied by a similar noise. This will be the second time I've rebuilt it in the last 6 months, the first time was just due to changing the brake discs so it made sense to do it all. Sadly the noise is still there, exactly the same and only on the passenger side.

Probably stupidly, whilst I had it all off, I didn't change the axle end tube seal, but the question I have is, what supports the rather long and heavy drive shaft and CV joint at the axle tube end? Does it just sit on the seal?

It's been 8 years since I last (and only time) I did a full axle and I can't remember, nor can I see anything on a parts diagram.

The only thing left that could make the noise is the diff, but if I use a listening device on the diff it's quiet - the noise is definitely coming from the hub end but, like I say, it's all new. Even changed the brake pads (that was hoping) to no avail. I suppose the noise could travel along the longest shaft. Now: 2010 2.4 TDCi 110 Utility Wagon

I would think the CV joint itself supports the drive shaft.

If you remove the stub axle the short end of the shaft/CV moves freely whereas the other end is held perfectly in the centre of the cup.

You'd think there was a bearing there but it could just be supported by the end of the axle tube and the oil seal, aided by the diff of course. Now: 2010 2.4 TDCi 110 Utility Wagon

If you remove the stub axle then the seal in the neck of the swivel ball will be supporting the weight of the shaft and CV, but once it’s all assembled the CV sits snugly into the bearing in the stub axle which keeps it in line and supports its weight.

Great, thanks for confirming.

The noise must be coming from the diff then, so may need to remove and check it Big Cry Now: 2010 2.4 TDCi 110 Utility Wagon
