Hi This is my first post, only just joined, so forgive me if this topic has been covered before but I can't find the answers anywhere. I own a 2008 TDCI and have recently bought a lexus ls430 with the 3UZ-FE engine with a view to putting it in my defender. I can't find an adaptor plate to keep the existing manual gearbox. Is there anybody out there who can tell me if there is one? Failing that I can find a plate that converts it to a BMW gearbox. I understand the MT82 gearbox is made under license from BMW so can I get a BMW bell housing (which also has an outside slave cylinder) and bolt it to the MT82 gearbox? Does anyone know if the bolt pattern is the same? Any help or advice regarding all aspests of this conversion would also be gratefully recieved. All the best Tim

I now realise the stupidity of my initial question as the bellhousing is not take offable. Has anyone done the 1 uz-fe or 3 uz-fe conversion with an m57 manual gearbox to the lt 230 transfer box? If so any advice would be greatfully received. I can get a conversion plate to m57 gearbox but I'm finding it hard to get an M57 gearbox. Are there any conversion plates from lexus engine to an equally strong gearbox that any one has tried? Any help would be super as I think the head gasket has gone on the tdci so I may need to tackle conversion sooner rather than later

I'm not aware of any connection between BMW and the Ford/Getrag MT82 transmission.

I'm now resigned to the fact the mt82 transmission has to go. With it's internal slave cylinder I'm not going to miss it but I'm looking now for a conversion plate from 3UZ-FE engine to an M57 gearbox as I know there is also an adaptor plate from M57 gearbox to lt230 transfer box. I was however looking to see if anybody has an adaptor plate from 3 UZ-FE engine to an equally strong gearbox other than an M57 as these seem hard to find ![]() |

Thank you Yes I asked them the question regarding a plate and they advised the M57 gearbox as they do an adaptor from that to lt230. It's the gearbox I'm struggling to find as drifters use them apparently ![]() |

I wanted to send you a PM but as a newbie computer said no!! I have in mind the PMC adaptor from 1/3 UZ-Fe as they are apparently the same at the back to M57 gear box I did however think last week why don't I put the R380 gear box on then that'll bolt straight into LT230 ![]() ![]() |

If you want a manual then you're best off with the GS6-53DZ out of many many BMW's. There are plenty available from ebay or breakers. There is an engine and transfer adapter for this transmission. 1989 90 4.3 V8 2012 L405 OF 2014 D4 HSE Lux (SOLD) 2015 90 HT (SOLD) @d9o.mf |

Torque is what tends to kill gearboxes - particularly the lumpy instantaneous torque of 4 cylinder diesels. If you look at the torque profile of a 300Tdi vs. say a 4.6V8 the peak torque of the 300Tdi as each cylinder fires is significantly higher than that of the smoother running V8. So although the 1/3UZ might output more torque on paper that doesn't tell the full story. The R380 and LT230 is a simple solution - provided you're not a lunatic I don't see why it wouldn't work and there's a simple adapter plate off the shelf (and conveniently the one I have surplus to requirements ![]() The one thing that is bloody tight is the passenger side header to the clutch slave cylinder. I just took a quick look at your thread and it's impressive to say the least! I'm pretty sure I'll be delving into it many times from now on. Re the GS6-53dz there are lots about but apparently its the 330 or 530 variant with codes HGU and HGD that fit the PMC plate unless you know to another adaptor plate maker, in which case please let me know. The majority of the gearboxs on ebay are N47 with a different bolt pattern to M57. Thanks for the reply and I'm pretty sure I'll be asking you lots more questions ![]() ![]() |

Best way of learning.
Rather than trying to do everything in one hit why not try the R380 route first since it's a simpler, if the box doesn't survive / you don't get on with it then can always look for upgrades. Ed 82 Hotspur Sandringham 6x6 95 Defender 110 300Tdi |
