I get some strange intermittent running issues with my td5 p15. Coming down the motorway today horrible wet conditions my defender starts surging. It pretty much goes away any constant throttle but the more throttle you give it the longer the surges. You can keep a cruise at 60 with a bit more throttle than normal.
Pulled on to the hard shoulder and restarted to see if it cleared the issue. Nope when building speed it was surging again. I have a compushift display so can see throttle and boost %’s throttle stable and boost up and down not surprisingly. Got back to cruising speed car behaves normal. 1 Mile down motorway it back to being ok no surging under acceleration. It down it before and the surging only manifests itself on the motorway. Another issue that I’m not 100% sure isn’t in my head is that I feel I loose throttle response some days on my commute so normal cruise along at 60 at 45% throttle. Then the throttle responses becomes sluggish and I’d need 55-60% to keep cruising speed. As quick restart and I feels like it’s back to normal. I’ve try logging data on my nanocom when I feel it gets sluggish and all seems fine no strange readings Typically I never have the nanocom in the car when the more extreme surging starts so have no logs for that. As I’m sure that would show something up. The surging on motorway probably happens once a year but I don’t do a whole lot of motorway driving. My td5 is running a alive stage 1 map but I do have the original standard mapped ecu which I’m going to put back In once home. I do wonder if my fuel pump is starting to play up. But it never fails to start hot or cold and with a short crank. Sorry if some of this doesn’t make sense just typing out on my phone whilst fresh in my head. Any pointer much welcomed. . |

Waste gate is fine and it doesn’t feel harsh enough to be overboost
Standard air intake. And I don’t think it’s water being sucked in. I don’t remember it rainIng the previous time it did the surging. Just wish I had the nanocom in there to do a log. As I think it would have narrowed things down. |

Have you checked the air filter anyways? Standard intake or raised they still suck in water in heavy enough spray. Foam filters tend to be more forgiving than the OEM paper type.

I'll check the fuel relay.
Had no issues on the return journey. I really do think I have a underlying running issue. I'm going to swap out the alive Stage 1 ECU tonight. |
