If it’s multiple circuits, it can be a single shared ground point.
I would imagine it’s a bad earth or loose eyelet, then if that ground point is shared to then creates voltage leakage into other circuits which then causes random issues.

The key I found to tracking down the culprit on mine was the multimeter checking for ground resistance on different circuits.
The ground should be as close to zero Ohms as possible, if you find a high reading instead then you can zero in on that ground run.

All sorted! Another session tonight, my first mistake was that I’d been looking at the wiring diagram for a pre2002 td5

Anyways o/side wheel off and start removing the conduit that houses all the wires. I was expecting something similar to the near side, but they did a good job , that side was a pig to get off, and wires like new, so nothing obvious. I then took the earths off the transfer box nothing noticeable but cleaned up and bolted back on more in hope..... but no change

So then I spent the best part of 2 hours with the multimeter checking the earth wires resistance...... nothing obvious and all low readings. Out of desperation I took the bulb holder off the stop tail on the offside and although not dirty cleaned it and still no change!!

So I then tried a new bulb even though the other one worked .......

Sorted

All that for a 50p bulb

Thanks for peoples suggestions. Hopefully this thread will help someone else

Had a similar thing years ago with a friends car that lit the headlights when the brakes were applied, took ages to sort until we realised that it had previously had a dual filament tail bub replaced with a single filament variant ans was effectively shorting across the holder......took a bit to find

do you mean its on permanent or flashes when the indicators are first initiated??

if its the latter then thats normal only flashing permanently when you connect a trailer plug

Glad you found it, it really is a headache I know I’ve been there with similar issues before.
Every new issue can be a surprise, the most odd things can crop up.

Yep it was a PITA ! You know it’ll either be 10 minute job or several hours, in the end it was both. Worth it though. I think I had 2 issues the frayed wires on the near side coupled with the dodgy bulb. The state of the wires on the near side convinced me it’ll be damage/ wear causing a short/earth issue. When I didn’t find any I was then sure it would be an earth fault. The bulb change was desperation
