First question is: Has it been reported to the police? it sounds like attempted murder! 130 Puma HCPU with an Artica 240LR Demountable Camper

Possibly relevant anecdote. My Dads car was hit a few years ago whilst parked. Pushed forward by the impact about 5m or so. All the cosmetic damage was fixed at the time. About 6 to 12 months later the diff failed. It was a newish car with not that many miles on it so I’ve always been convinced the impact damaged the diff as it was in gear at the time so the impact will have gone through the drivetrain.
There would be no way to prove this retrospectively, and it couldn’t be checked at the time without significant labour expense. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS |

Yes it was reported to the police and there is an incident number. They called this morning to say they are following up on ANPR but haven’t got much to go on- a red pick up isn’t a lot for the police to work with.

Hard to tell with that one, it wont have done it any good, but i have thought that the engine may have just stalled on her, and the front tyres locked up. Causing flat spots on the tyres.
Only way to tell if all is ok, if its still drivable, just a quick little run around the street and back so it can go through the gears. I hope your wife and daughter are ok, god knows what that arse hole was thinking. The only way the police would really pick it up if it passed any ANPR systems before hand and afterwards. Sounds like a crash for cash, but without the claim from the red pickup
I hope your wife and daughter are ok. Sounds horrifying. Not easily forgotten. Just doesn’t seem to be any point unless the vehicle was stolen and they were joyriders out to amuse themselves?? I really should get a dashcam reading this |

It didn’t stall, engine still running when I got there 5 minutes later. It drives ok, smells of fuel, the odd warning light flashing. I’ll speak to the insurance tomorrow but struggling to work out how to get an assessment of the potential damage to the drivetrain. I was only keeping it until spring next year then swapping it for a manual for my daughter to learn in / first car. 🤦♂️

That's what i am thinking, its either nicked or its not insured. Or that the driver has had chug, and that thought the car was an unmarked cop car. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back Success is 90% Inspiration and 4 minutes Preparation # you can make it! |

if you can get it fixed your self, by getting some second hand spares, and a body shop to paint it all etc. I would bring your plan forwards, just in case, even if you replace it with a cheap little runner until next year. Really sorry to hear of this horrendous event.
I have a feeling that the auto box will have sustained a lot of damage. I think even VW state with the engine off and in neutral you should raise the driven wheels off the ground if going 30 miles or more. Check your owners manual and it will explain how the vehicle should be towed. However in this case the engine was running, in drive, and being pushed backwards . This means fluids , clutches etc were being pushed the wrong way, and against the pressure of your own engine trying to push it all the other way. Unfortunately I can only conclude If the box has not failed it will very likely fail pretty soon. Look up a specialist auto box repair company in your area, they will very likely be the guys the main dealers sub contract their work out to as autos are highly complex and best left to a specialist. Advise them of what happened and they will be able to advise on the likely consequences. These are not local to you, but I’m sure they could provide advice if you can’t find a local auto transmission specialist to talk to, especially if you highlight what happened to your wife and daughter http://auto-transmissions.co.uk/ |

Perhaps instinct caused your wife (or daughter, who ever was driving), to hit the brakes.. causing more damage to the front, but if the front wheels locked, then there would be no damage whatsoever to the gearbox. If the engine was still running, then I think the gearbox did not transmit any torque through the torque converter, and should be fine. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
