disabled driver
hi guys i work as a site manager at a school the area is terrible for parking and a number of children have been knocked down over the years .
at the moment we have a disabled gentleman who insists on parking on the school drive way even though its double yellow lines and from the information on the blue badge site says you must not park in a school entrance
please don't get me wrong both my parents was disabled my mum severely
my concern is he drives over the pavement or moves the cones i put out to keep the drive clear .
do you think I'm been over cautious or been safety conscious .
now the said gentleman is not in a wheelchair and seems to walk fine without the aid of a stick
your thoughts please

You are doing the correct thing, he is being selfish and not concerned about the safety of children. He needs to be corrected.

I was in our local park t’other day noticed that they had double yellows in some areas accompanied by signs on the verge saying something to effect that the restriction also applied the disabled badge holders. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

You have to be objective rather than subjective. You can’t base your judgement on ‘degree of disability’, it’s a very dangerous path.

If his parking/access is a danger to children then a blanket ban on all parking including blue badge is the only way forward. Surely safety of the kids must be paramount. 2012 110 XS SW Orkney Grey

Why does he park there (I don't mean "there as opposed to somewhere else", but rather "what is the purpose of his visit")?

As I understand it the disabled scheme is to help those with limited mobility, so if he is getting out for a legitimate reason some form of *safe* preferential parking is probably in order, but if he is dropping off an able-bodied offspring then it is not.

I would also think that if his actions are endangering children then you must act to sort out a reasonable compromise, all hell will break loose if he injures a child or causes a child to be injured (especially as there is now evidence that you are concerned). Is there not somewhere else that could be made available to him for preferential parking?

I think you need to follow the exact same procedure for anyone else who parked there regardless of any disabled badge. I'd also call the council to ask them to take immediate action to rectify the situation.

Have you got a neighbourhood Policeman for the area?

I’m not saying they need to arrive with a tazzer or in Granada’s, Capri and Escort like The Profesionals but if you explain your problem to the local neighbourhood Police, they may have a quiet word with him and let him see the error of his ways? Softly softly.

I can’t remember as it’s been a while since I have seen the rules but I am sure there is something that says to only park when it is safe to do so and not put others at risk - a blind corner for example or a School entrance. Sometimes giving someone a badge gives the badge holder a false sense of entitlement. Doesn’t have to be a blue one

I think if i was in your position (site manager) then I would be referring the problem to the headmaster and getting his take on it. Defender 90XS SW

its now been handed over to the police his parking is illegal this has been confirmed the blue badge scheme .
its a shame i have asked him several times not to park there but he simply refuses on the strength of a blue badge . The head has been involved but I'm responsible has the health and safety officer for our school its been handed back to myself all documented of course with dates time and video evidence .
of course ultimately it would be our trust who would have to stand in the dock if something was to happen but of course this is what I'm trying to avoid as stated before i there has been a number of children run over outside of school
