When I replaced mine I seem to remember the instructions also required a small amount of sealant in a specific place, before fitting the seal assembly. Not sure of it's location but it might have been upper/lower engine block interface
I"ve looked at the workshop manual but can't find it so it might have been with the seal instructions. |

That Keef, I know the bit you mean, it’s the point on the sealing plate where the crank case meets the stiffener case below.

Sounds like a leak from somewhere else running down the back of the block and hitting crank boss, maybe crankcase stiffener or oil gallery plug?

Right then boys and girls, leak found! After changing the rear crank seal again it was still leaking so gearbox back off and again, cleaned up the surface and ran it for an hour with the year box off. Took the flywheel off to see this:
Click image to enlarge A smear of sealant was used on the whole thing when installed, but from checking the workshop manual there are also 2 “squares” to fill up on the seal itself where the seal sits over the seam between the crank case and the spacer (As pointed out by Pacha and Keef). This wasn’t done first time around. Now it has and ran for an hour on the ramp with the gear box off and no leaks! Been hard work this. Original landy specialist washed his hands of it; “they all do that”. Ended up going to a good local mechanic to actually get it sorted so will be sticking with him. Now that’s what I call relentless dedication. And great to see it’s paid off. Well done Co1 for highlighting the problem and the solution.
I wonder how many other defenders they have had are suffering from your original lady specialists mistake, and more importantly inability to read and follow the manual, question themselves, and when things don’t work wash their hands of the problem. Perhaps a trip back to point out ( with pictures) that it does not happen to all defenders, just the ones they do incorrectly, and they should really pay for the work of the guy who had to diagnose and rectify their mistake. |

He's probably right - they probably do all do that if the seal has been fitted by a "professional" who can't do it right! Well done with your persistence and for finding the problem. |

Just an extremely polite suggestion... But this is a superb bit of detective work that might not be found in searches by others.
Is it worthwhile renaming the thread to what it is? I just made a mental note to do this when I do my clutch and seal, then realised the thread name wouldn't be searchable |

Thanks Matt, yes I had thought of that. If it saves one person having to take their gearbox off three times it will be worth it!!
