Transfer box ratio change in a puma
I'm aware this is done regularly for the TD5's and TD's but in the puma i fell as though 1st is useless and it revs awfully high on the motorway. So why not make use of 1st and raise the gearing on the gearbox overall to increase fuel economy while on the motorway. Most of our engines are tuned so can handle the higher load and i think it would generally be a better ride.

So to that end, has anyone ever fitted this ,

The standard ratio on a defender tdci is 1.22 but this is 1.003. Ill do the maths later but for £200 its worth it if it saves fuel on the motorway.

Any input appreciated Cool William

No - but I found running higher profile 285's did the trick nicely, 1st better, still tows well, more relaxed at speed etc.

Not sure how the increase in gearing relates to the ratio change but for me its 100% spot on.

I have the 1.1 ratio in my 2.4 Puma. This is roughly corresponding to a 10% decrease of engine rpm for the same vehicle speed. It just feels right on my tuned 2.4 Puma, for my usage. Pulling nice and strong.

Wondering if the 1.003 ratio that you are looking at may be pushing it a bit and possibly resulting in a sluggish truck when in 6th gear?
Alternatively you may just change the tyres size (diameter) to the same effect, except also affecting low range.

Hi,

vehicles are different, engine tunes are different and driver perception is different, we have had a couple of customers do this but I suspect in most instances the 1.003 would be too high, Dave
