Defender can't come close to competing in the US markets at its price point. It may be a 'cool' (as the journalist called it) SUV - ooh, that must hurt JLR who resolutely refer to it as an 'off-roader' - but it's also a bl**dy expensive SUV. It'll only ever be a premium alternative in the SUV market. But one could argue that is the same for Europe for most models being bought. I've yet to see one being driven by anyone who might have alternatively chosen a Rubicon, classic Defender, Bronco etc. The last owner I saw step out of a 110 last week was a 65+ year old woman decked out top-to-toe in Montcler. Different car, different market to the old vehicle/buyer, but at the same time too expensive to mop up US buyers. They've created a vehicle that falls in between the two and is why they're poaching so well from the Disco. A premium and very capable, oval badged, large, square SUV. Monsieur Le Grenadier
