Remap of 180bhp - upgraded intercooler & airfilter?
Hi,

Looking to get a remap of 180bhp on my 2.2 defender, with this remap will it need an upgraded intercooler or will it be okay without? and same with the air filter?

Thanks
Charlotte

It will be ok without an uprated intercooler but whether that would get the best from the map sounds like a question for whoever is providing your remap. If they can't tell you with any certainty then you should probably look for another supplier.

As for the air filter, stick with the original. They've been shown by testing to be better than the typical aftermarket ones and some of the latter have an oil coating that can damage MAF sensors. Darren

You will find that there are improvements to be gained from a good-quality air filter and induction upgrade, the factory set-up is restrictive (as are the cheap end of the market replacements).

A Nuggetstuff filter with a Nakatangena induction system (even with the Nak snorkel) will perform noticeably better than factory.

Agree on using a gen LR air filter. With that sort of set up think about de-restricting the air intake to the filter box, or as i plan to do go all out and fit a nugget stuff sealed air system https://www.nuggetstuff.com/product/defender-puma-sealed-airbox/ and a nugget stuff air filter box https://www.nuggetstuff.com/product/defend...x-version/.

PS- worth checking out BAS - bell auto services , generally thought the best regarding maps

You’ll notice a huge improvement with the re map, you won’t notice much more with the intercooler and air box mod.

I’d be asking yourself what you use your truck for, If it’s travelling abroad to hot countries, high altitudes, submersing it at opportunities then go for the intercooler and sealed air intake, otherwise I’d say it’s not worth the extra cost.

I bought the intercooler and did the air box mod and with the re map, the truck is rather quick but I swapped the intercooler out and i couldn’t feel any real difference, but I’m sure on a chart it’ll show I’ve got an improvement.

I originally fitted it as I travel abroad a lot where temperature and altitudes are more unforgiving than Europe.

If you can afford the intercooler buy it adn forget about the issue.
If not just change the hoses to Silicone.
The boost hoses will most certainly split. The intercooler maybe not.

I'm not so sure about that. I have changed one hose on my 2007 2.4 in 250,000 miles, and that was because it wore through on the steering box, not because of conventional splitting. Having said that, I have a Provent fitted which stops a lot of oily gunk from getting into the hoses. I wonder if the reason that some folk find silicone hoses last longer is because the factory style rubber ones degrade when full of oily residue.

Don’t forget to have that discussion with your insurance company or all the efforts and expense could come to naught.

To achieve realistic gains across the board then it's a Holistic approach to upgrading across the board.

Yes you can have 170 - 180 horse without the upgraded intercooler, but ask your engine to do that when say towing uphill on a hot day and there could be unwanted side effects. A few members on here have fruity remaps and whilst the standard intercooler is jolly good intake temps climb and the ability to make power drops. I have seen a few times that yes you can have Map A or a stronger Map B but be careful when giving it the beans (to paraphrase)

It then starts to spiral then. The intercooler hoses (namely the elbow under the intake manifold) are prone to blowing and even so if they are getting on then rubber ones will get soft with age due to oil contamination, So it's new hoses time as that's an easier job to do when the front end is in bits.

When I was doing this last year Alive informed me if i wanted the full fat 470 NM of torque then a freer flowing exhaust will be needed. Whilst I didn't go with theirs i did go with an aftermarket stainless one.

And there is a salient point. Don't go chasing a big HP figure as it isn't a racing car, Find a good map that gives a good chunk of spread-out torque and enjoy it, as a big wave to surf when rolling onto the throttle. Also can be found on Fb, Ytube, Insta & Twitter @4WDSouthwest

I was recommend that anything over a stage 1 remap aka approx 150h +, would require physical upgrades such as intercooler etc.
For various reasons really, but yes you can go up to that level but I definitely think that if you did go with the additional upgrades first and it gets taken into account with the tuning.

But this is just my view, everyone has differing views. Thumbs Up $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

My little two cents on the subject.
I was fine on the factory tume and accoutrement. I went for the bas 170 and based on *my previous* driving style, did not need the intercooler or silicone hoses.
On my first drive across Germany, I found that with the added power, I was in fact, driving it harder. Would be difficult not to. I was watching temps and my post-intercooler temps were 85-90c. A couple of hours later I burst the turbo to intercooler hose. It was chafing from new, but when properly hot it failed.
I’d say, get the intercooler, get the hoses, and be satisfied with a job well done.
Personally I’m not a fan of a situation where you must practice restraint not to have a failure. Other opinions may vary Roaming around 🇳🇴🇨🇭

I took the view that at the end of whatever process, it is a very non-aerodynamic Defender. I opted for the 150bhp from BAS - it has transformed the drive and drivability. I do not do towing or panning down the motorway regularly so this suited my needs fine. As others have said - avoid oiled filters. Rgds.

I expect only having 15bhp would totally transform the drive and drivability Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter
