The hinges seem to be designed to stop the tailgate from falling over (as you say avoid hitting the pintle) if the chains to the tub are missing.
But I do not know if this was done by Landrover, or a diy contraption. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

And the rear screen looks weird. Seems like a CSW side windows from the Defender era. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

The whole rear panel of the cab is different to normal, it doesn't have the corner windows. I wondered if it is a Santana-assembled vehicle.
The hinges are clearly to support the open tailgate in the absence of chains, and it does appear that the tailgate has been adjusted to be further back when shut, which makes me wonder what is inside the back that we can't see the requires these minor but involved modifications. |

I think that's a locally produced Iranian vehicle, which does have its roots in Santana. Darren
