Rx8 seat Airbags....help

Hi all,
I'm hoping someone can talk me through the removal and disarming of the srs airbags on the rx8 seats?

I got a set this weekend and followed the very helpful instructions I found on here to get them prepared to be fitted but I'm still not 100% on how to remove, disarm and prep the plastic cover to go back on.

Can anyone who has done this give me some advice?

Hi Biffa I cannot remember how to get the plastic cover off . but once in just unbolt airbag .They need a electric trigger to operate Unless you are sure of which wire does what . Do not get 12 volt near them . Because apart from possible injury you will need new boxers .I Know Embarassed very scary
Very comfy , I mounted mine on some 45x20 steel box first for clearance .Which made it easier to line up with original seat fixing

The advice I followed was to simply trim the yellow wire and tape off (the issue if this wire is energised!)

I did read some threads on actually removing the airbags when I fitted mine, but don't think many people actually do this.

If you Google you will find lots of guidance, such as:

"The yellow plug is for the Air Bag in the side of the seat. I just cut the plug off to get it out of the way. You can't remove the airbag because the cover is the trim at your left shoulder and it is attached to the airbag. "

The automotive industry generally use yellow as the colour for SRS (supplementary restrain system) wiring. You need to be very careful when doing anything with the wiring/airbags. As an aside, salvage yards store steering wheels in an armoured cage.

If there is just a plug I would seal it up and tape out of the way.

What happens when it goes wrong.......

 Rgds.

Chris

Thanks all, I have taped up the yellow wires I'm just concerned it could go off at any time. I read a thread somewhere, a guy had cut the airbag up and disarmed it to use the plastic cover again?

that is what i done . Removed cannister and all chance of going off in a bizzare accident . Not that you would find defender electrics to do strange things in any way .

How did you dismantle the airbag?

Personally I wouldn't be happy sitting on or near a viable airbag with its connector cut off or unplugged, I'd be too concerned at the prospect of electromagnetic interference triggering it.

I'm not sure what an insurance company would make of it either.

I’ve just done this. Prise off the wee SRS Airbag clip. There’s a an 8mm bolt in there, take that out.
on top of the yellow plug there’s a black clip prise it up and release the plug from the airbag.
Now pull the airbag holder assembly out a wee bit and upward it will come free.
To remove the bag I removed the 3 nuts and went around the edge of the metal airbag enclosure with a screwdriver to separate the two.. it’s a bit fiddly but really easy.
I put the metal airbag enclosure back on so I can refit it using the original 8mm bolt. Here’s a FEF pics which should make it easy to follow
