A quick question - if you have an Ifor Williams tipper fitted with 13 pin electrics, does it charge the tipper battery off the vehicle when it is running?
My vehicles have 7 pin electrics but the Ifor has 13 - I just have an adaptor at present but wondered if it was worth changing to 13. At the moment I just charge it manually (I have a solar panel that I attach to the trailer when it is parked up) but if you are using it a few times in a day I guess the battery must get well down. The solar works well for occasional use. It's actually an old electric fence energiser that packed up, but the solar panel and charge regulator was still OK, so I dismantled it and put a few feet of cable in and a matching plug inside the control box. I can charge it anywhere (handy as it is usually parked >100m from the nearest power) but it takes a few days as the solar panel only puts out a couple of amps max.

As far as I can tell - no, it doesnt charge the battery.
We do most of our distance towing on our tipper using a vehicle with a 13pin connection, and the battery still loses charge (Does not charge), in exactly the same way when connected via an adapter to the 7pin on our Defender. Unless - the 13 pin is not wired correctly for that on the car, had it from new, but its a Cayenne.  |

If you look at the 13pin plug on your IW trailer you'll see that it only has 8 pins - so the answer is no. I'm in the process of rewiring one of my IW trailers to replace the 8 core cable with 13 core and replace the 8 pin plug with a "proper" 13 pin plug.
It annoys me that they don't offer the option of 13 core/13 pin plugs and cable when ordering a new trailer.  Defender 90XS SW

OK thanks - oh well, back to the solar then. No they don’t. Youcan fit an Anderson plug and connect both batteries that way. It’s annoying battery access particularly loaded is so bad when you’ve just the hand pump and a bed full of stone

I fixed that problem with a lead and a socket inside the control box so I can plug in a charger with the bed down - it's a complete pain otherwise. With the solar charger I can charge it anywhere it is parked, it's just when I am using it that the capacity is a concern.

One of my current grievances with the 13 pin system is that nobody seems to make a fully wired 13 pin "curly" cable! |

On my old 100" bitsa I had a 2" receiver hitch for the tow bar plus a winch mounted on a 2" box powered by an adjacent Anderson socket.
I then made up a welding cable Anderson / Anderson lead and fitted another plug to the Ifor Tipper so it would charge at a good rate whilst driving, or even lift off the 100" battery if my mate had flattened it using it with his Disco. I also made a short lead Anderson to croc clips so I had a rear mounted jump start socket either from or to the 100" I was working at an establishment that had a good supply of welding cable, Anderson sockets, clips etc..... I now try and remember to charge the new Ifor, I think its less work. Keith |
