Lof half shafts
Hi all
I'm fitting some lof half shafts on the weekend. When installing do I have to put grease on the spline? Any tips would be appreciated.

Assuming the one piece ones, then no, they go into the axle oil. Maybe given a smear of gear oil so they aren’t going in dry, so to speak, but it’s probably not critical. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Just jack up the end you are working on and you shouldn’t lose much or any at all. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

I smeared some diff oil over the splines and then down the shaft where the bearing sits.

I had some spare, so thought I might as well, but probably not crucial.

Although it is worthwhile putting some on the paper gasket to hold it in place, but guess you could use any old oil for that. 2011 CSW XS 90

Good to hear that these are straightforward to fit.

I've only had my defender a week or so, and the clunk taking up drive is driving me nuts. So I'll start with these and then see what else is needed!

You'll likely just start hearing other clunks Laughing

I did mine, but now can hear a different 'smaller / lighter' clunk from underneath.

Suspect it could be the output shaft, which I'll change to the upgraded LOF version, when I fit their clutch bundle in the coming months. 2011 CSW XS 90

Yes you're probably right.

A good friend of mine's output shaft failed completely so I'm aware that it's something I'll probably need to do.

I've been reading up on the ashcroft kit as well as the LOF one. I've not made any decisions yet, but I'm sure either of them will be 'fit and forget' in real terms. I don't do huge mileage anyway.

I'll check the front drive flanges and propshafts too, as I understand they generate similar clunks (although less severe).

All done this morning
So much better now. The longer shaft didn't have any play but the shorter side was real bad...
New lof clutch and output shaftin two weeks should make the drive even better....
