Indicators location
Hi all,

I've been wondering, on my Defender, the indicators are placed below the headlights, and the sidelights above. I purchased the Defender new in the UK in 2009, so I know for a fact that the location of those is genuine.

My Series 3 from 1979 has those the opposite way, indicators above, sidelights below. I've google for images of Land Rover Series 3, and there are quite a few like this apparently, like this one for example (wikimedia.org)

Does anyone know the reason for this? Is it a mistake? or specific to some market? or just maybe somebody changed the location of the indicators? “A Land Rover immobilized is a moral defeat for the driver and bad publicity for the vehicle, […] it's up to you to do justice to your Land Rover!” - Land Rover Driving Technique.

In some markets they were the other way around for a while (Australia, for instance, which is where your linked pic seems to be). They're very easy to change though so could well have been done by owners over the years. Darren

Haha, thanks Darren, I think that perfectly answers my question! Thumbs Up “A Land Rover immobilized is a moral defeat for the driver and bad publicity for the vehicle, […] it's up to you to do justice to your Land Rover!” - Land Rover Driving Technique.

When the headlamps first moved to the wings in 1969 the indictors were left in the upper corners. This is obvious from the press photos and brochures from the era of the very early vehicles of that spec. However they were quickly swapped around, so the indictor was in the bottom corner. This continued to be the factory standard on all subsequent models built at the factory.
Certain export/CKD markets did put them the other way, most notably Australia. The Norwegians also swapped them on their military 109"s, although I don't know if that was at the factory at or later. 2011 110 USW

Funny thing is, for some reason, I reckon it actually looks better/more “natural” (if that makes any sense) when the indicators are placed in the upper corner… “A Land Rover immobilized is a moral defeat for the driver and bad publicity for the vehicle, […] it's up to you to do justice to your Land Rover!” - Land Rover Driving Technique.
