Living on the other side of the sleeve, (French word for the Channel, in case you're unsure), we're seeing this being acted out in real time as alongside any Defender parts I want to buy, we've been extensively renovating/working on the house and garden and Mrs Grenadier has been making some UK purchases. So far we've had a number of different experiences. The worst is through a supplier being able to offer absolutely no help in explaining what shipper they use, when VAT will be paid, where and by whom, whether there will be an duty liable and what admin fees to expect from the shipper.
At the other end, we recently ordered a couple of delicate and expensive light fittings and the supplier said they would do everything. Paperwork would cover VAT, explain admin and duty costs, and would prevent the item being held at customs and us being sent a text asking to pay VAT and a release fee (which we've also experienced). The company who could answer absolutely no questions, didn't get our business. The lighting specialist, a small independent who'd clearly made a lot of effort, did get our business and the two fittings (large, fragile and heavy) arrived in excellent nick just five days later. I've also just last week contacted DefenderUpgrades, Masai (ordered steps, will let you know how quickly they arrive), Exmoor trim, Devon 4x4 etc, for their thoughts and they're all very positive and feel they understand the process, even if it takes a little longer. None said they wouldn't do it, which we had heard back in Jan. We've bought loads of stuff and generally it's been fine, although we heard that delays over usual shipping times are about 10 days, so expect something to take two weeks or a shade more, than just 4-5 days. I also ordered a full heating system from the UK and the c**king about was unbelievable. Arguements between the supplier and plumber as to who was liable for VAT, duty, fees and who should do the paperwork. Normally takes 10 working days for the system to arrive, to almost three months. Shocking. Simply put, there are companies that have made the effort to understand the processes and work with them, further do whatever they can for their clients, and there are those that haven't. I don't buy the 'I'm just a small business excuse' as I know the lighting company is just three people plus warehouse staff, and they nailed it. As ever, comes down to effort. Agreed Grenadier. There are people in life who got things done and there are others with a sense of entitlement who blame everyone else rather than take responsibility.
No matter the situation you can offer a good quality customer experience. A lot of the Defender suppliers have for years charged a premium, many for substandard parts. Now they are being asked to do that additional 20% effort they are falling short. |
