I bought and fitted a Brodit clip and active holder to my 110 this evening. With CarPlay needing to be plugged in to work, and a quality cable also being required, I decided to hide a new cable as best as possible.
The clip fits really snuggly to the top dash bar, takes seconds. The Active holder is easy to fit. One thing I recommend is to fit the holder to the right hand set of holes in the clip if you don’t want to obscure the top right of the pivi screen. To hide the wire as best as I could, remove the rubber tray insert to the right of the pivi screen, pull the lower dash bar towards you release it. Unscrew the 3 small bolts under the dash to lower down the bottom cover. I also then removed the 2 torx screws to release the lower dash cover at the bottom to allow access to grab the wire. Pass the phone cable down past the left of the temp sensor that is exposed behind the lower dash bar. Reach up and grab it, pull it down. Undo the 3 front torx bolts on the drivers side hockey stick and pull it away. You don’t need to remove it. Pass the cable behind it and tuck it behind the plastic trim in the left of the front footwell. Plug it into the usb-c socket. Reassemble and there you go! Now when I place my phone in the holder, it connects to CarPlay and seems to stay connected. Gareth, I have several Brodit phone and iPad holders - they didn’t have a clamp for L663 Defender when I asked last year but seeing what you have it looks the same as the one I use in my Tdi300 90 so I’ll have to give that a go and see if I can avoid buying another mount. I thought the point of car play was so you don’t have to have the phone mounted up like that?
Then again the functionality of some apps in it is so constrained as to be practically useless. |

Wireless is becoming more common (and you can buy adapters), but you’ll still need to charge your phone somewhere if you’re using nav etc.

I have the wireless charger - but not wireless charging phone - Old iPhone 5 SE
You need to connect car play with cable - so using the cable means charging and carplay I just use the holder - to know where phone is. As you say you could leave it loose on cable. If I upgraded phone and LR upgrade to wireless car play - then no need for wires... but in the mean time... this is a good solution. I had the phone holder from my last 2 cars - so it was just buying the bracket. I saw the Brodit clip - but prefered the phone lower - hence ordering the Atach one. 3D Defender printed parts also do a mount too that could have been used. I saw it yesterday when I ordered the extra high level boot lights https://defender3d.co.uk/products/ols/prod...amp-system https://defender3d.co.uk/products/ols/prod...d-lighting |

Yes the idea of CarPlay etc is to be able to leave your phone in your bag/pocket. However, the Lr system needs to be plugged in to work. So I was plugging in and leaving it loose in the console. The movement caused the lightening connector to loosen and then caused me problems with CarPlay operation. (Flashing screen etc.)
I don’t have wireless charging in my car, it would be a useless addition without wireless CarPlay! The CarPlay system only uses a few apps. I like to use navigation software such as OS maps, these don’t work with CarPlay. I think it is similar to the old Defender clip, however I don’t know for sure as I sold that with my old Defender! It did come with new Defender specific details. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV 1966 S2a 109 aka Betsy 1968 S2a 88 aka Bob 2014 Jaaaag F Type 3.0 Supercharged. |

The clamp for old Defender models doesn’t fit, it would if the bit where the “Brodit” logo is were about 2cm shorter though! For those of us driving on the left, I used a very similar solution as you guys did, a sturdy A-tach base that snaps between the two bars just to the right of the steering wheel column, and a ProClip charging cradle. I use Android Auto and a Samsung phone, but same thing.
I actually like the phone there, because it's sitting right above the engine start/stop button and I don't end up forgetting it in the car. It's also within eyesight to browse emails and other stuff you can't do on the touchscreen. Where did you source the A-tach base?
