How to clean alloys?
Washed winter off the Defender yesterday, I used a brush on the alloys and the front 2 came up very clean, but both the rears would not rid themselves if the black/brown crap on them, tried a toothbrush today with washing powder and its still quite solid, why are they different to the front, and what will loosen it?

I use Valet Pro's Bilberry wheel cleaner. Spray on, dwell for 5 minutes then power wash off. You can use it undiluted for stubborn stains and it's pH neutral. Defender 90XS SW

Same brake pads back and front? Had this problem once on another car when I switched one axle to a different brake pad manufacturer - that dust was painful to get rid off.

I have found Sonax to work very well on brake dust

Gtechniq have Fallout remover, turns iron particles purple and kind of liquifies them, makes them easy to clean!

Then coat them with Gtechniq Wheel armour and your set......just a spray with fallout and a rinse then on, they have a really good range of top quality gear

Another vote for Auto Wheels by Bilt Hamber.
I can’t fault any Bilt Hamber products, cracking value.

I buy most of my cleaning products from them. Their auto wash only requires one teaspon full for a whole bucket. Their snow foam is amazing, Clay bars, surface cleaner, polish, double speed carnauba wax etc all win awards.

Ps. I have no connection with them, just their products do what they say and are reasonably priced.

I find the best way of helping prevent it is to wax your wheels, quite heavily. That will help a lot.
The front brakes do most of the braking and the fact that they turn means the brake dust has the chance to flow between the alloys.
Around the wheel nuts is the biggest pain to get off due to the small gaps. ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️

Twice a year when changing winter for summer rims and vice versa, my tire center will put my wheel/tire combos in their wheels washing machine. 5 minutes per wheel, and the plastic pellets in the water jets won’t leave a trace of dirt and brake pad dust a chance, even the inside of the wheels are like brand new afterward. All this without any damage to the rims finish. At the equivalent of £2.50/wheel this quickly has become standard procedure for 10 years now.
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.
