I should have updated this sooner- better late than never.
Armed with the EKA code, all I managed to achieve was shutting the alarm up but not the immobiliser. Apparently this is quite common.
I managed to find a local independent and got a recovery vehicle to take me there. Although the work basically just involves swapping modules and pairing the new ones it depends on a web connection to Land Rover that is registered to a specific IP address so it couldn’t be done in my drive. I got the vehicle back a day later with a new ALM module.
One week later and things were back at square one. I called the garage who told me to bring it in if I could get it running. I tried the EKA code without much optimism and it started so off we went. Later that day the garage called me for the EKA code as it was now immobile in their workshop and getting in the way (I found this oddly pleasing). Apparently, despite the new ALM, the EKA was unchanged as it is stored in the ECU.
Got it back a day later with a new RF receiver and it has been behaving since.
What do I think I’ve learned?
- I was the fourth late Defender alarm customer in a month at the garage and judging by this forum there may either be an endemic fault or they are susceptible to cold. (My battery doesn’t have a problem and has been charged monthly in lockdown.)
- I suspect that the original problem may have been an intermittent fault with the RF unit. I strongly recommend people tell their garage to focus on this if they have alarm problems with an ALM equipped Defender.
- my new ALM replaced a D prefix unit and I wonder if it was OK but if it was then that is expensive water under the bridge.
- if you have a faulty 10AS module then the LR bulletin says replace it with the full ALM system, complete with new-style fobs, which is about £1800
- clearly my original system hadn’t become ‘unpaired’ from my fobs as all worked fine the next day. Cheers, Guy.

Does this mean that with the ALM system the RF receiver is separate unit?

My understanding is the latter key fobs with the chrome strip did talk to the latter ALM ECU via a separate RF receiver. However the circa 2012-2014 defenders had the earlier Lucas fobs which paired to the first gen ALM ECU ( not a green 10AS) and that had an integrated RF receiver.

Yes, from earlier discussions this seems to be the case.
MY 2012 - 2013 ALM CH-12 (black), same fobs as before
MY 2014 - 2016 ALM DH (black), not affected by brown-out defect anymore, separate RF module, new fobs with silver strip, simple battery change procedure (no more naked dancing at full moon required
