Start by joining GLASS and get some green laning under your belt. You might pick up a few scratches from hedges but they'll (mostly) polish out... You'll get access to TRAILWISE which is their online mapping portal for all the green lanes. Will also give you info as to which ones currently have restrictions to keep you legal.
Most areas run newbie days to show you the ropes etc, You'll occasionally bump into grumpy ramblers, and occasionally (like I did at the weekend) get called a 'F'n Moron' when I very politely asked a farmer if he could move his tractor which he'd parked across the track. IF you really want to trash your £60k truck, head to a pay and play site, hand over your £25 and spend the next 2 years hosing crud out of every nook and cranny   Last edited by camelman on 9th Apr 2021 10:01am. Don’t LR give a free LR Experience voucher with every car? Good for a taster.

They don't in Germany.
And at JLR Experience in Wülfrath you are not allowed to use your own car, you have to use the ones provided by JLR (except for the road safety and handling training). |

I've never done the LR day because I assumed you'd be using a stock car (plus I worried it'd be like a corporate team building excercise). Is that not the case in the UK?

For a novice, I'd book on a day with someone like Protrax (other training companies are available). You can choose either to get some training at an off road site or go on an accompanied green laning jaunt. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

The LR day is generally you and an instructor having a play on their off road sites in one of their standard vehicles. Not much corporate team building activity involved  |

They will use a stock car (model of your choice) but that's not a bad thing as it allows you to explore its capabilities without damaging your own vehicle. They're not corporate team building exercises  They're just intended to teach you about the vehicles. The typically free half day sessions are a bit superficial but top it up to a full day and you'll have a great time. Darren

LRE West Country (Honiton) run (BC, Before Covid), Trek days using you own vehicle.
They are divided into two events, the normal, any LR vehicle and the Defender only Trek days, the later is around Exmoor and is great fun. At our club level, unfortunately driving days was dying a death as new owners of any 4x4 did not want to get them dirty not helped by the fact that the MOD increased their charges to the point they were not cost effective. Maybe when things get better a trip to Salisbury Plain will be on the cards. |

Over the years I've been on LRE days at a number of sites such as:
Eastnor Castle Solihull East of England (Rockingham) Scotland (Dunkeld) Each has had its own charms and I've enjoyed them all. The EoE one was me in a car with Ed Cobley, as he worked there at the time, so that was nice to meet him. Your voucher it’s for a half day, well worth paying the extra to extend it to a full day and if you can book midweek that way you venture off their teaching ground and off around their greater estate area after lunch and there are fewer people needing the cars which means no sharing!
All the sites are good - the least appealing one for me was the half day I had at Luton Hoo LRE, but Eastnor, Solihull Halewood and Dunkeld have been great days. Dunkeld is worth the hike north for especially in the winter. There are nice hotels /B&B’s around and the Atholl Estates land is vast and very beautiful once you head away from the LRE Centre. That area is Scotland’s answer to the Fall on the East Coast of the USA in Sept October too, the leaves changing colour make the scenery even more beautiful. Out on the Atholl Estate on a Trek day last October on the wettest day ever recorded in the U.K.! Definitely worth getting some proper off-road tuition, it’s surprising how things can go bad very easily. I’ve not done a LR Experience but would recommend using your free voucher, it’ll teach you to use your vehicle. You’ll be amazed what it can do!
Another good greenlane organisation is All Terrain UK, very little money, and has a great app (Smart Trail) for finding greenlanes, also a forum and give Zoom tutorials on greenlaning. They/members also run days out. I found the best way to get into it is follow some experienced locals. I joined some members from this forum on a day out in Thetford, great way to find the lanes and meet likeminded people. If you’re ever near Thetford, it’s a nice introduction, but nothing too damaging (a part from the last time when the lead vehicle lost a door handle  ) and you will likely get bramble rash... James
