Knocking noise when braking
I guess it wouldn’t be a Land Rover if I didn’t find a fault!

When braking to a junction etc, slow speeds, firm brake pedal rather than very gradual pedal, I get a knocking noise.

It’s in line with the speed of the car and reduces as I stop. It actually sound like something catching but I can’t think what or where.

When driving around there is no noise at all, gentle braking too. As soon I press firmly on the pedal it happens.

Just to be clear, this isn’t ABS noise.

Any ideas what this is? Was really hoping I’d not need to send it back quite so soon. 😧

Also, in this photo what are these ridges in all the brake discs for? Never had that on a car.

That noise turned out to be a easy repair, it was the heat shield for the prop touching the rear flange. Just bent it back job done.

Fire retardant application on seat coverings and incorrect finishers applied to brake discs looks like JLR’s monitoring of suppliers isn’t what it used to be now they are not building the cars in traditional car building places......... Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

That’s the closest anyone has suggested yet, thank you for that. Gives me something more concrete to go to the dealer with. So many dealers are relatively inexperienced with the Defender, they need help like this to get them looking at the right things.

Thanks chap 2016 D4 HSE

Here’s a four second video that displays the noise. Having to brake firmly but still not in the ABS territory that we know about.

In general driving it’s smooth, gentle braking seems fine, it just seems to be when the front end is loaded up under braking. It almost feels to me like a CV joint that’s got an issue.

Tell me what you think.

Sounds more like a loose wheel rattling.
