Series 2 Advice
All being well, and work dependent, I’m off to view a Series 2 on Friday. It all looks pretty reasonable from what I can see. From the listing on the link below, is there anything I’m missing? I’m hoping it could become a bit of a rolling project, rather than needing a resto. The owner is sending it off on Monday for some new outriggers.

Any advice would be much appreciated! Charlie

It certainly appears to be what it says it is. A series II with original features. I see it has had rear cross member and is having bulkhead outriggers. The chassis may be in need of more than owner thinks. 1995 Defender 110 CSW

£12k for a rolling project?

Seems a lot to me.
I’ve seen many better for a lot less.
I own a better one and wouldn’t value it at that.
Car n Classic always seems to make folks think there car is worth a fortune Big Cry

Keep an eye on Series2 Forum. Occasionally nice member vehicles come up

Be sure it’s what you want. They drive like a tractor and forever need work

Yes I’m conscious that the chassis could need a fair bit of work, but hopefully not.

Sadly I think that’s the going rate nowadays. We already have a Series 2, which Philip Bashall fully restored. That ended up being roughly £10k at auction and it didn’t even run . . . Charlie

I have a friend with a late s2a Station Wagon on a galvanised chassis with overdrive who might be selling. Drop me a pm if you're interested.

The vendor does seem to find some nice original vehicles. Whoever buys it I hope they don’t restore it to a shiny clone of many other over the top restorations.

It looks like a lovely original example of a 1961 Series II, e.g. 3-bolt tailgate, lighting, screwed-on bulkhead flaps, radiator, beancan, door-tops, seat bases, handbrake lever and all its original paint.

It's not uncommon for the chassis out-riggers to rot because they trap mud but they're easily replaced. The bottom of the radiator panel might need looking at. The footwells must have been replaced and they are correctly swaged.

I've not seen many as original as this and it doesn't look expensive to me. Please don't ever paint it Thumbs Up

The radiator panel and rims would be the only things I’d look to restore in terms of the cosmetics.

I know the driver’s footwell was replaced a couple of years ago.

Providing the rest of the chassis and the bulkhead are sound, it could be a winner. Whistle Charlie

I would Kurust or Jenoilite the rad panel then consider clear lacquer.

Annoyingly, it’s gone off today for the outriggers rather than after the weekend. Hopefully it’ll be back in a week or so and I can have a look around it then! Charlie

Looks like its sitting a bit low so check the leaf springs. I know it doesn't need an MOT but I would like to see the results of an MOT type test from an independent garage. Other than that it does look very original.

Interesting that you mention that. Its MOT history shows it having advisories for the springs in the last few years. Charlie
