Please help stop my paranoia! I need an overview. I have a 2011 Defender 110 and would like to know if it's "normal" for...
1) a significant "clank" when changing gear, especially between 1st and 2nd; and 2) 3rd gear to "snatch" when engaging. The dealer here (Germany) is pretty hopeless - just wants to sell me an Evoque My Dad had a 200 (?) in the '80s and I remember it was pretty rough but what should I expect now? Loads of thanks for any input. Cheers, Matt |

try changing gear slowly - not like you would in a normal car. Having read the many posts on this subject throughout the forum I change gear very slowly and deliberately. Best practice appears to be not to apply any throttle whatsoever until you have let your foot off the clutch after changing gear. It takes a bit of getting used to but if I forget and start slapping it about like my little Peugeot you can hear all manner of mechanical clonky noises ! There really ought to be a section on this in the Owners manual

Gawd bless you all sirs!
Clank comes when engaging clutch(can feel it through the gearstick) , "snatch" comes when changing into 3rd gear. It's only done 5000 miles so I was wondering... My mind is at rest for now and I will clutch/change gear really carefully but I will also bear in mind the advice about knackered clutch plate etc. With a few years guarantee there's still plenty of time for things to go "properly" wrong... Have a good weekend, Matt |

I completely agree with Rossy
reprogramme the grey matter and don't drive it like another other car (modern) that you may have experienced |

Ask for the the transfer case to be re-shimmed, this seems to be fixing much of the slack in the drive line here in OZ, certainly sorted my drive line clunking... Last edited by LR09WA on 18th Sep 2011 12:51am. Edited 1 time in total |

Best way to drive a defender is keep foot on brake when
Letting clutch out until biting point is reached, then release Brake to apply acceleration removing clutch foot at same time Have fun be happy |

not only is this a good way to do a hill start and is taught by land rover experence, it means that even with a full load and a big trailer the anti-stall keeps every thing nice and calm and under control. |

To put it simply drive it like a truck and not like a sports car, racing changes will make the drive train as slack as my granny's knicker elastic in no time. Steve.
Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades. Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW. Mine has been doing that since new, now on 28Kkm. I am now threatening LRSA with legal action if they do not fix it, and suggested replacing the gearbox -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |
