Thanks for your help.
I have got a diesel compression kit being delivered. It comes with some adaptors so I will try the compressor leakdown and see if I can pinpoint the loss of compression further. I am.going to try and start it from cold tomorrow and if it fails to start I will know I have to get on with a replacement or rebuild. I have never rebuilt an engine before. Maybe I should learn. Thanks again |

No, it is most likely that the engine is excessively worn. |

Was the engine sitting idle for a long period of time? Perhaps outside?
If yes, it could have simply been a sticking ring, or a little corrosion on the valve/valve seat? The fewer the cylinders in an engine the more it needs to be in top condition for it to start easily. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Drain coolant removing head check valve/valve seat and also with piston down check liners for no scoring rust or glazing and no lip at the top of the liner
If its ok new head gasket set reassemble top end |

I guess the machine sat for 3 weeks. Maybe I knocked a small bit of crud into cylinder when doing glowplugs or had injectors out?
Anyway turns out my cheap compression kit adaptor doesn't fit. I am going to use the dumper this weekend and see how it behaves. Dorsetsmith that is probably exactly what I should do but I have quite a lot of work on at the mo. I think I will keep my eye out for a spare engine and in carry on for now. Thanks all, a lot of knowledge on this forum |
