I believe if its the vehicles original number re issued, it can be transferred. If its a number the DVLA have issued to a vehicle when the original plate was sold it can't be transferred.
When my Unimog was imported from Switzerland a couple of years back, it was given a old style plate (3 number 3 letters) but it can't be transferred. |

It wasn’t the original number and it was marked as not transferable on the Series II V5 but the DVLA phoned me when they had processed my V765 to ask if I wanted to keep it.
I wasn’t going query this, paid for and received the retention certificate. |

Sometimes they forgot to mark a replacement number as non-transferable - I had a replacement RSY number which I transferred off the vehicle. |

I have Anyone for Mud on retention - NE14 MUD, bought it at the same time as Am one for Mud and Not one for Mud
Can you put a 14 plate on a 64 plate vehicle though? They are all DVLA cheapest price band. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed! |

Yes you can put a 14 plate on a 64 plate vehicle but not the other way round, you can't make a vehicle appear newer than it is. 2015 Defender 90XS HT

If you want a dateless plate then go for a Northern Island plate all dateless and as cheap as chips all legal in the UK. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

There's loads of cheap stuff out there for 'current' style regs.
The DVLA themselves are generally cheaper than the agents who just buy them off the DVLA and add their margin on in a lot of cases. https://dvlaregistrations.dvla.gov.uk/ - |

What's wrong with the one you get free with the vehicle?
