Puma aux spotlight switch.
I am after some advice please.

I am attempting to wire in a puma/td5 style light switch. Electrics are not my strong point.

I understood the switch worked by switching a relay to earth which is how i wired it but it didnt work. i searched and found this

https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic64891.html

i have wired it with a relay as suggested in the above topic.

i have put black to earth
Red/yellow to dash lights
Blue to earth side of relay pin 85
blue yellow to pin 87
12v to pins 30 and pin 86

I get illumination lights,

i have 12v at pin 1 going into the switch

switch in or out i get nothing else

If i pull the blue and yellow to pin 87 and just apply 12v to it, then i get red indicator light on.

i have no continuity between pin 1 and pin 3 or 4 with the switch pressed in which i was expecting.

Am i missing something or is the switch goosed? Cheers

James

Sounds like it's the switch if 1 and 4 aren't connected when the switch is pressed in.

If you want to check your wiring is sound, use the rear fog light switch temporarily (but you'll need to hold it in).

Apart from being momentary action, it works exactly the same and takes the black connector.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

With the switch pressed, you should get continuity between pins 1 and 3/4. If you're not then it won't pull the relay in, which is backed up by the fact you can get the red LED on by applying 12v straight to pin 5. On the face of it, that does sound like a problem with the switch.

They're quite easy to take apart to reveal the internal tracks and the switch mechanism, which is probably a worthwhile exercise. Darren

Many thanks. Wiring works when switch replaced with fog light switch, so seems switch is at fault. Will pull it apart as suggested. Cheers
