Strange screw head on L322
Hi all

Can anyone tell me what type of screw head this is?

It holds a plastic bracket on the rear wing of the L322 where the rear bumper clips in. I have asked the question over on the Full Fat forum but nobody knows..

tri wing screwdriver

Used a lot on computer consoles etc to avoid tampering. Amazon sells them Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

5 months after starting the search I found it, and here is the details

Strictly it is a form of Tri-point head since the slots are aligned with the centre of the head. In the Tri-wing form, the slots are not aligned with the centre.

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_screw_drives#Tri-point for diagrams.

Why on earth would they ever have used these on a bracket that helps secure the rear bumper?

Here’s a better shot of the 3 bolts/screws and the bracket

Despite the odd head, these are actually aluminium pop rivets, so you won’t be unscrewing them. I’ve removed these brackets myself previously.

Lol!

Thinking about it why would you use security style fixings for a bumper mounting plate? Yes, the aluminium rivet does make sense as it it double skinned there and you wouldn’t be able to get a nut on the other side.

I recall when I ordered the new rivets to re-attach the brackets, they came as standard looking pop rivets, not with that odd head, despite supposedly being genuine LR items.

It must be something to do with the production tooling in that case.

Breakstem fasteners with funny heads certainly make more sense than tri-point screws.
