Scotland 2004 Defender 90 Td5 HT Zermatt Silver
TD5 Bulkhead Replacement Costs
Hi

So, my 2004 TD5 90 potentially needs a new bulkhead as rusting around the drivers pillar quite bad.

Engine 710 in Edinburgh have quoted £5,000 for the work! Yes £5,000!

Has anyone had one done recently and could confirm the price they paid?

I know I could do it myself but I don't have a garage or covered space.

Cheers

Tank

There's a lot of work involved in a bulkhead swap, plus the cost of the actual bulkhead

By the time its painted, fitted and built up, £5k probably isn't too bad a price

Worst part to replace on a complete vehicle, done a couple and there's so much to remove to get it off

For starters, a decent galv bulkhead is going to set you back £1,500 prior to paint and fitting. Charlie

https://www.lr-refurb.co.uk/bulkheads says that they'll supply & fit for £4320 inc VAT. Based on the rest of that page I'd suspect that's for a galvanised bulkhead, but worth checking.

To be fair 710 are pretty dam good at what they do (personal exp of them on my 110), but given 50% of the cost there is labour and faffing time there must be a nice farmer you can bung some notes to and borrow a corner of a barn to strip it out, even if you have to hire a van for a week your probably looking at saving 50%.

Thanks

Yeah Engine 710 get a good reputation I was just surprised at the price but as you say a lot of stuff to strip.

Going to take the dash and everything out to see just how bad it is.

Cheers

time is the killer, the bulkhead (stripping, welding, fettling) and re fitting will be a lot longer esp if theres rotten fittings etc.

It must take them a while as my bill from them for a clutch and flywheel change and a few other bits was less than £500.

I got mine done in 2016 https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic49854...t=bulkhead imcluding some parts I bought

A new bulkhead from Duckworths - around £1200
2nd hand windscreen frame £50
Paint about £400
Dinitrol - what ever that was.£50?
Fitting - local LR garage £800 no vat that I know of, but no invoice either.
Sold the old bulkhead to £250 to Ashtree - they collected - advertised on Ebay and they contacted me.

Plue the new bits I got, seals, gaskets, bolts etc. 1999 Defender TD5 110
