I guess it depends how much is actually there, and what it could be bought for.

With time and care it could be brought back from the dead in a sympathetic way.
If the early narrow spring 1600cc motors are still fetching north of £30k, then there must be some headroom for a rebuild. Even with say £6500 for a Richards Chassis and Pegasus bulkhead to sort out the main structural elements.
If I was doing it, I'd keep as much of the original panel work as possible, warts n' all!

The n/s wing has fallen as it’s not attached to anything..

May I ask the significance of that please.

My 80 has a tailgate with out the centre rib. I have been wondering why it's not there when every other 80 seams to have one. And it's near perfect as well

That is a very good question! I am now thinking that the significance is that it indicates that I am losing what few remaining marbles I have left.

I have a recollection of seeing an article somewhere that covered the design of the early tailgates, of which there were several, and I am sure that I have read about tailgates without the centre rib. My recollection is that only a very small production run had these. Having said that, I have just checked all the standard texts on the early vehicle (Hutchings, Smith, etc) and although the other key differences are described exactly as I recalled, the centre rib business isn't. I therefore cannot remember where I read it, possibly an S1C newsletter (I have a full run of these from the very first, so it would take a long while to search) or just possibly the S1C forum. Possibly I imagined it and it exists only in my head.

My recollection is that there were some vehicles produced with tailgates without the centre rib, but I cannot substantiate this nor at this time provide any evidence. I have seen tailgates which have clearly had a rib which has been lost, probably the result of tow hitch damage, but I have seen a couple over the years which do not appear ever to have had a centre rib, i.e., there is no visible evidence of spotwelds anywhere you'd expect. The generally good condition of the tailgate in the photo at the start of this thread made me think that this is possibly one such, but in reality you'd need a much closer look.

I will keep trying to recall why I think this.....

Blackwolf, I am 100% certain that no 80's were produced at the factory without the centre rib on the tailgate.

The pre-pros had a thick tailgate rib and the very early production vehicles had a small "L profile" rib as in the photo (with no rope hooks).

The subject vehicle of this thread, a 1949, would have had the top-hat rib and shows some evidence (I think) of having had such a rib.


After trials with the military, the MOD asked for several areas to be strengthened.

The tailgate rib was changed to top-hat section (as were the strengthening ribs under the wheel arches. These were L profile too, on very early vehicles, again as in photo).

After spending the afternoon wallowing in reference material I have come to the conclusion that you are absolutely right, and the only tailgates which have no centre rib are those where the rib has fallen off after the spot welds have failed. It woudl appear that this can happen leaving very little evidence.

As you say, on production models the alternatives were either the angle strengthener or the top-hat, although there seems to be some variety in the shape of the TH sections, and there are rope hook/no rope hook variations.

I really don't know now what made me so sure I had seem something about tailgates with no rib in the centre. Disturbingly, old age and loss of marbles is the only explanation I can come up with. I suppose if I write about it on the internet though, it must become true! Rolling with laughter

I searched though all the old photos of my 80" and the only one I could find with a picture of the tailgate was this :

I've looked at it with a magnifying glass and I'm convinced I can't see a middle rib on the tailgate. It is a poor quality photo so difficult to be sure. It was first registered in October 1949. When I acquired it in the late 70's it was a bit of a sleeper and very original so I can't imagine anyone removing the middle rib. EDIT : As you say though blackwolf, perhaps the spot rivets did fail along the way and it dropped off!!

As many did in those days, I heavily modified it by shoehorning a V8 in and changed the steering box to one from a series II Big Cry At the time you could still get "new old stock" windscreens and door tops from the likes of Jackson's at Mission for sensible money.

I've been and inspected mine, it has no middle rib and there is absolutely zero evidence of it ever being there.

I can see the spot welds along the top and bottom, all in good condition, but non in the middle.

The tailgate is in very nice shape for 70 years old. 2007 90 Puma - Love it - Best car I have ever owned.

1989 Ninety 200tdi - Love it - Second best car I have ever owned.

1951 80" Series 1 - Love it - Third best car I have ever owned.

Some of the things we did to 80" Land-Rovers back then make you squirm now, but who ever could have imagined how collectible they would become. There was almost and abundance of NOS parts too (and Craddocks used to give good service)! I used to get a lot of parts from E.V.E. Components in Iver, anyone remember them?

I don't suppose anyone here has a pair of SE62 trafficators for sale, by the way?

Blimey, E V E components, there's a blast from the past. Tony was my man for lightweight bits for years (actually he worked out everything I needed without seeing the vehicle).
The bloke was a legend, sadly it's been quite a few years since he passed away. I was in the area and popped in for old times sake, and everything was gone, dunno what happened to all his stuff. Oh woe, oh woe

Some who follow Team Faff on fb may have seen I posted the pics up there, a chap who is local to me said he had made an offer on it some time back and he was turned away as they allegedly had a £4k offer... well it's still there.

I'll roll past tomorrow (fri 26/2) and see if there's anybody about again.
My offer was not going to be anywhere around that....in fact, barely 4 figures Laughing
