Puma Brake pad Life
Just wondering how much brake pad life others are getting ? I use my 90 Defender as a daily drive and have owned it from new in 2015. I replaced the original factory pads at 34000 miles and they still had about 6 mm of material. I just replaced them again the other week (EBC Red) and now its at 71000 miles. This time the pads were less than half worn!! The discs are all original.

I appreciate that the use of vehicle is a huge contributory factor but I do run it daily on all road types. I am not complaining but interested if this is usual? Thumbs Up 2015 90 XS Santorini Black

From a vehicle point of view, the Puma engine has the lowest compression ratio, so in terms of engine braking it has the least resistance, so more use of the brakes.

Of course different brake pads have different wear characteristics. I tend to prefer the pads that wear faster, as I have feeling that they wear the discs less. But discs are not as expensive anyways.

The DSC system on the 2015-2016 models kicks in more than you think and is pretty aggressive on the brake pads.

My 90 has been through front and rear pads in 36k miles.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

my original factory pads lasted about 30k before I changed them but still had plenty of life left DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

There are so many things that can change the life expectancy of your pad life, from the pad material, to usage and environment and conditions you drive in including your load weight, but if your getting 30k of life I don’t think you need to worry unnecessarily.

A new vehicle has the best chance of long brake life for its first set, as everything is fresh and new, and new vehicle OE pads normally have thicker friction material. Also, replacement pads bed in to the brake disc wear grooves quickly which takes valuable life from them but it’s important this happens quickly as it increases the contact surface area making them efficient.

Also, Traction or Stability control is one driver aid that reduces the life of your pads, your vehicles is systematically braking individual wheels without your knowledge to keep your vehicle balanced, controllable and moving in the correct direction. A small price to pay for added safety.

Braking is a waste of energy so save on fuel... brake less Rolling with laughter Ride like you stole it!!
If I’m not on a bike it’s because only a 4x4 will do…

I don't have ABS nor TC Sheep

P.S. The garage didn't even want to change thé rear ones, they were at 30%

My first swap was approx 65k front, 80k rear (miles). But then I live in the mountains, so lots of heavy braking on long descents. Monsieur Le Grenadier

I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list.....

My puma (110 utility) seems much heavier on rear pads, possibly due to the much smaller pad size. I changed the rear pads at approx 40kmiles and just changed the front+rear at 85k. The fronts still had useable material on, despite being a bit tapered. Discs didn’t need changing. 2014 Keswick Utility 2.2
