I have seen the same symbol on my P400 occasionally. Strange it’s not in the manual but I assumed it was something to do with the hybrid tech

Driven 80 miles today, 40 there 40 back. Over the Peaks along the A619 to Clay Cross. A nice run, pretty consistent traffic, not a route you can rush because there are lots of lorries using it. Quite hilly, but a good run.

I decided to drive there in Eco mode, and back in normal. In eco, the more I drove the more I saw the foot on pedal symbol. I’m reasonably certain It’s the mild hybrid system. Solid green for using electric assistance, outline green for recovering energy. You need to be going at a steady speed to see it.

So, trip there on eco.

Return in normal mode.

So difference was 1 mpg between eco and normal. Very similar driving conditions, so a good indication of consumption in normal use. I wasn’t hanging around, but not racing just normal driving, a few overtakes each way. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

Is there anything in the app that gives you a gradient profile of the route?

I didn't even realise that it had an eco mode, seems kind of pointless on a Defender! I tried it out today anyway, mine has the same symbol.

I don’t think it has anything to do with the MHEV (which is just posh start/stop really), it seems to be a coast feature. It seems to come on during light throttle conditions when the car reckons that you would be able to, or indeed should, take your foot off the throttle completely and coast on the overrun - this being a zero-usage state for fuel.

The 48V MHEV system recovers energy on engine braking, but only uses this for start/stop. The difference over a normal start/stop system is that the belt integrated starter/generator allows it to start/stop on the move (as very low speeds) and allows the motor to provide a small amount of power just during the half-second or so that the engine is restarting. This removes any delay perception from the system when putting your foot down to go. It’s not a hybrid in the sense of switching to electric power entirely at any point, only the P400e PHEV models have that feature.

Mine has never actually done the start/stop on the move, it only ever happens when you stop. I generally turn it off anyway as it’s annoying, but the times I’ve forgotten it works well and is basically invisible in its operation.

I have never experienced start-stop on the move either.

I agree it does seem to be some sort of coasting management indicator. Why though is it solid green when your pressing the accelerator, and outline when your not?

Also I noticed on the long descent into Chesterfield, which I pretty much coasted all the way down, the outline symbol went off after 20 seconds or so, with no change in accelerator, brake or speed. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

I read somewhere that it is only 2wd in ECO mode and if like our mini it disconnects engine from gearbox when coasting. In the mini this is slightly disconcerting as you loose all and any engine braking effect until you either touch brake or accelerator. Interested in hearing more. 90S D250 fuji and loving it.

Maybe the solid green is to tell you to take your foot off? The foot moves off the pedal slightly when going to the outline symbol I think so would indicate you’re in coast?

It is odd that it’s not mentioned anywhere in the manual.

Nitroneil - definitely doesn’t do that. In fact it doesn’t seem to do anything differently in eco other than turn all your heated seats and air con right down or off.

A pointless feature anyway given it does 31-32mpg fairly consistently in normal mode.

I’d agree. Until we know more it seems to be a bit of a pander to the “look at me I’m saving the planet too” brigade! 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

A bit of information on this.
It’s part of the Eco driving coach program. You need to select the Driver Assistance mode on the virtual dash info panel to get the full effect. You have to be in Eco mode, and you have to select that each time you start.
The symbol in question is telling you to consider coasting as the car has determined that there is a change of driving situation ahead. For example if there is a roundabout coming up, it displays a roundabout symbol and a foot-off-pedal graphic in the DIP as well as the green symbol I saw. It also has symbols for junction, sharp bend, downhill section and speed limit change. This explains the aparent randomness of the symbol if you don’t have the DIP selected on the virtual dashboard!
In reality, I think it’s of limited value, all it’s doing is asking you to coast to regenerate the mild hybrid battery. A decent driver would probably be doing that anyway and doesn’t need telling!! 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV
