Spent Wednesday at Atlantis Dunes with the Cape Land Rover Club, a fun outing as usual
Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge One of the guys brought his ND. I was expecting it to get stuck often, as the sand was extremely soft due to the hot weather we've been having, but it ran rings around all of us. The only time he got stuck was when he tried deliberately to do so by doing a short run-up and to test extended mode + ATPC. Here's a video of the day, you will see how most vehicles struggled in the soft sand, and how the ND didn't. -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |

As he said - It rang rings around all the other vehicles and only got stuck when he tried to get stuck....
He called it ND (New Defender) |

So did the new Defender make the dune climb simply because of more momentum ~ it's heavier than the other vehicles and has a more powerful engine so hit the bottom of the slope with more speed; or was there something different happening with the 4wd system?

^ not quite: even on slight inclines where most of us had to really work the engine, the ND seemed to cope better.
The owner did fit 18" BFG ATs, but then again all us were running some form of AT -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |

Yes, the D2 that seemed to be struggling did make it up in the end, just needed a longer run-up and bit more momentum. But that may be down to the MT tyres it's running, as it kept digging itself where the AT just 'floats' better. -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |

Yes it can be a bit confusing, i will always think that the Defender 2 will always be ND ( new defender ) 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up. Keeper. Clayton. |

What’s the deal with going to Atlantis Dunes? Last time I was in Cape Town visiting friends we were looking at going but couldn’t get information on when it was accessible

Weird, it's very easy to go there: rock up at the gates from 8am, pay your R200 per vehicle, and have fun all day in the dunes.
Not sure why your friends would not know this, a simple Google search would have given you the info -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |
