Here´s my recent ARB thread -
https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic75137.html The ARB´s are from Extreme 4x4, 1" front and rear, with polybush mounts. Very easy to fit. Everything included in the kit. Make sure you get the right mounts for your model/year. The tyres I fitted last summer are 285/75 A/T´s. They immediately felt so much more refined than the 255/85 M/T´s that had been on the car from the beginning. Some of the improvement is surely due to fresh rubber being so much more flexible and compliant than 11 year old scrubbed and cooked (off-road, hot climates) tyres. 1998 Tdi 90 SW, 2008 Td4 90 SW, 2012 2.2 90 SW, 2" raised Trailmaster/Terrafirma Heavy Track Raids, 255 MT´s, Recaro CS´s, anorak, wellingtons |

Check how old your tyres are.
As Wild Card said, the rubber gets harder with age and it affects grip mostly in the wet |

Right just to close this thread off and say thanks for all for the help.
This 90 wagon has now had some ARB's fitted. From what I recall they're an OE spec and with rubber bushes. I opted for this, as it was a simple solution for the fitter at the time. For a basic kit, it appears to be more than adequate. It has certainly made it more sure footed. It holds a lot more speed cornering and if I so desired it can further accelerate through the corners with more confidence (At least in the dry....). But alas this is a Defender that doesn't require such knowledge. In the 'grease', its feels better than before, but new tyres are still on their way and once fitted I'm confident this feeling will back to normal. Naturally this additional ability has highlighted limitations of the tyres and the stock (although near new) LR suspension. I need not go further with it (aside from tyres), but if I was so inclined I could head down that road... I do not feel in hindsight an uprated performance ARB was necessary, as given the other suspension limitations, it probably wouldn't have made much of a difference on road. I am however (unsure whether to thank or blame another member on here ), in talks with Bowler in having a fast road suspension (and seemingly in and amongst other things....) fitted to another Defender 90 as the plan for that is different. Anyhow, now that 'testing' is over and this is not one of the track cars, it can revert back to normal bad weather driving. If it begins to feel awful.. I'll echo thoughts accordingly. All in all pleased that this is now resolved. |

Glad you're pleased with the result!
I think people often jump to uprated ARB's without knowing the compromises. Ive considered going for uprated ones myselft but have just stayed with the factory fite ones. The uprated ones will give you less flex and a harsher ride. Fine if you never go offroad but will be a compromise otherwise. I think the OE ones are the best balance between off road capability and on road stability. To conclude... More off roading: remove completely... More road hooning: Go uprated... Bit of both: Factory fit |

/\/\/\ That is a fair point. I'd say the same for springs. For a bit of everything genuine are hard to beat. WARNING.

I had exactly the same issue and the missing roll bar had no impact. It's the mud tyres and the blocks moving laterally when you corner. Suddenly it "goes" and just does not feel right around a corner.
I swapped my muds for a set of all-terrain Davanti Terratoura's and it made the world of difference and solved this issue. Been really impressed with the tyres both on and off road. IMHO I'd change your tyres and see how it feels first as you may end up saving a small fortune. |
