...forgot to add; the issue also persists when engaging the hazard warning button, regardless of whether the engine is on or off.

I think I would look to try a different flasher relay first, and as you have LED's all round go for the "electronic type" with the correct pin layout to suit a defender, so that your dash indicator lamps function correctly. I use pt no.YWT10002L

Thanks llessur, you were absolutely spot on; I just removed the relay (a Wipac 'WFL7LED') and gave the pins a good clean, and the females on the board a blast of comp. air too. After reassembly, the indicators immediately functioned a bit better but not perfectly all the time - still some intermittent drop out. So I repeated the clean again and now they seem to be functioning perfectly all the time. Quite glad that seems to have been an easy job and, given that's the only item I touched, confirms the issue is isolated to just this part. I'll very likely purchase a new spare relay to keep on the wagon in case the issue persists or gets worse before its MOT.
