I recently left my defender standing in Scotland for over 3 weeks, where the temperature was below freezing for the whole time and dipped to -11 for a couple of nights.
There was abundant snow fall during that time and the vehicle was covered in about a foot of snow all over. Needless to say I was apprehensive getting the vehicle stared after it sitting for that time in the very cold conditions. The battery is the original from delivery, so its about 8 yrs old now,(2012) - not the newest, and has never been connected to an external charger. I arrived back at the vehicle at 9pm finding the locks were frozen, but the central locking worked fine and after some ‘jiggling' I was able to open the drivers door and popped the key in the ignition. There was a nice thick layer of ice in both the foot wells and inside of all the windows. The engine fired first time with no problems ! I was VERY impressed as there were several newer cars needing a jumpstart in the car park. The drive home to Cornwall was interesting to say the least with ice snow and very cold conditions all the way down. I overnighted in Gretna and the temperature was down to -10 over night, but the pop top, thick duvet and cab heater ensured a comfy nights sleep. So chuffed and impressed with the vehicle in the cold. - long may it last ! Click image to enlarge Camping nr Gretna As my 110 is a camper there were some interesting things which were affected by the cold. The camping gas sits outside under the rear wing, and was nicely frozen preventing me from cooking my dinner, and the water tap froze too, so had to take water out of the tank directly ... I did contemplate putting the gas bottle in front of the heater overnight, but I was not overly worried, as the bottle sits above the exhaust and would warm up after driving. So was able to have a nice hot lunch the following day Poppy - TDCI (Puma) 110XS 2.2 - Camper conversion - see the build here - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56530.html Elgar -TDCI(Puma) 110XS Dormobile - now sold Devon & Cornwall 4x4 Response - DC126 |
