Wow. I don't think I've ever seen similar pictures, where the matting has separated. I wonder if there's something in your local environment chemistry that's causing that?

The wear in your second picture - at the front of the seatbox is very common - that's just peoples' boots and shoes rubbing against it over time. If you replace it, there are various 'corner protectors' you can buy.

In my car, for the seatbox and floor/bulkhead I have the Wright Off-road accoustic matting. It's a very resistant Polyurethane mat.

I haven't got any pictures on this device, but if you look at my rebuild thread you should find some, or just google. Donald

Malta 2012 Defender 90 Puma 2.2 CSW Santorini Black
My 1988 90 had hardura in centre part of bulkhead and transmission tunnel. The transmission tunnel started to crack and fall apart after about 10 years. The bulkhead part survived a bit more, but now after 33 years they went all crumbly. Their foam backing however are as good as new.
In their life I used to only wipe them with a moist cloth. Never used any aggressive cleaners. But they had seen quite some sun shine, which I think dried them out. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

I hesitate to take the carpet to redo the interior. I saw at exmoor trim.
the best should be that I find the rubber kit is not too expensive
