Windscreen wiper problem
2010 Defender 90 tdci rh drive.
Driving in drizzly rain I realised that my wipers which were on an intermittent wipe had suddenly stopped in the parked position.
I moved the lever to off and then back to intermittent, nothing happened.
I then tried the normal and fast wipe which thankfully worked, and parked when disengaged.
Next I tried the wash wipe, washers worked but no wipe?
I was thinking that it may be due to a dodgy switch but am puzzled by the fact that the wipers were working fine for a good 15 mins then just decided to stop in parked position.
Any ideas or has anyone had similar issues which they’ve managed to solve?
I’ve looked for similar posts but most mention problems with the park switch, mine park ok?

On a mk 4 Astra I’ve had the same issue, the cause was the wiper motor. Their is a contact in the motor that is used for the intermittent sequence and it wears out. It was well known on the Astra forums including a rebuild fix. So if our wiper motors use the same setups by having a contact in the motor for intermittent wiping perhaps it’s worn and exhibiting the same symptoms.

I would also check the wiper relay as that controls the intermittent element. Search for 99 relay as that’s a mod to allows a variable intermittent setup so lots of discussions on the whole wiper relay area.

Two thoughts from me.

The first might be the stalk itself become worn, or just dirty. You could maybe try getting some electrical contact cleaner and squirting a little bit of that into the back of the switch.

The other one is a little harder to describe. Take a look at part 4 in this diagram.

Where the spindle on the motor drive cog comes through the casing (facing the passenger) there should be a thin 'thrust' washer, and a circlip.
I had it happen that the thrust washer had disappears (broken, snapped whatever). This meant that the cog was able to 'float' a little, and didn't always engage the park switch. Sometimes it worked fine, sometimes it didn't! Weird one to track down.

Just possibilities. (Edit - but the wahser issue wouldn't cause your washers not to work - that does suggest the stalk switch?) Donald

Could it be the relay?
When you fit a 99 relay it alters the intermittent wipe and the wipes, after wash cycle.

I also thought of the wiper relay in my post above, it’s also the easiest thing to change out and test, especially if you know someone else with a defender so you can test there working one in place of yours.

I think it is more likely to be the relay in this case (or possibly the switch), I suspect that the motor thinks that it has been switched off, in which case it will park the wipers normally. It almost certainly won't be the motor or park switch with these symptoms.

Thank you very much for your helpful replies, very useful as usual.
I was thinking that it may just be the relay after reading about the ‘99 relay’ posts (said he who knows nowt) so I’ll go down that route first.
I did mull over the switch too.
Does anyone know of a part number that may help so I can get one ordered?
Either a like for like replacement or a 99 relay type.......or both.
Then I’ll have to locate it?

I found the part number which I believe to be AMR2341 which is the std. relay but I got my eye on a Bosch programmable relay which I like the look of at about £57.
There are cheaper ones available but I guess the Bosch unit should be more reliable???
Oh I’ve also found out where the relay lives.......reddish in colour, top centre of relay layout.

I bought a VW 99 relay from ebay years ago, it cost about a fiver and has worked perfectly for 13 years and 250,000 miles. It is probably the best minor upgrade you can do to a Defender, it transforms driving in light rain and drizzle. it was so good I bought a spare, just in case, for about the same price.

Seriously though, there are usually several for sale on ebay for a reasonable price. I can't really think of any circumstances where I'd pay full whack for a new one. Just search for "VW 99 relay" or similar, eg

Regardless of relay or switch issues.
Lube the spindles with 3-1 oil and fit some rubber grease under the external caps. I had this and this cured the issues as the spindles were getting seized due to lack of lube.

Mine are working fine still, but are getting worn and are getting a bit of park droop when parked at the lowest point.

I had exactly the symptoms you describe. I removed the relay tapped it on the gear knob a couple of times and put it back in. Still working over a year later. I have since done what blackwolf suggests and lubed everything just in case

The stalk gets my vote, had exactly the same problem with the 300Tdi, some things worked and others did not, a new stalk cured it. they seem to regularly wear or burn out. Jeff

Thanks for the reply Jeff, I’ll try the relay route first.
The thing is that the wipers had been on for a while and went off of their own accord ie I hadn’t touched the stalk.
We’ll see though......I’ll post my results when I hopefully get things sorted.

As promised an update (but not the update I’d expected to post).
I’ve ordered a 99 relay from eBay but it hasn’t arrived yet.
Today after being out and getting the same result from the wipers I decided to have a trial removal of the relay.
When I pulled on the relay cap said cap came off leaving the relay in place.
I managed to get the relay out after a struggle as it was tight and because the cap was off I had a quick look at the switch part which appeared good.....hmmm? Anyway I refitted the cap and chuckling to myself tapped it three times on the gear knob as per Siwynnes instructions. (Albeit he did say a couple of times but I was more daring and went for 3 times) I then refitted the relay and buttoned the cover back in place.
I then decided to test the wipers .........wait for it......... they worked Shocked
I’m still going to fit the 99 relay when it comes as I like the idea of the bigger interval on the intermittent wipe.
I’ll let you know if the eBay 99 relay works when I get it..........
And of course thanks to Siwynne for his advice. Laughing
